Today our broiler element on our GE spectra JBP78 electric range caught on fire. Is this an element I can easily replace myself, like the lower one?

I ordered the part from GE, and found this videohttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=927IY7ZzI... will follow up on Tuesday with MY results! ;-)

I managed to replace the element all by myself! Ordered the part from GE on Sunday, it arrived today, Tuesday, and installed in less than an hour; that includes the trickiest part of removing/replacing the oven door, which was the trickiest part!

You will need to replace the element, If it was just the lower bake element, it is a very easy repair, two screws and two wire connectors. UNPLUG the stove FIRST!!

IT CAN BE IF THE ELEMENT HAS NOT BEEN REPLACED FOR A LONG TIME AND IT SOUNDS LIKE THE TERMOSTATS HAVE FAILD SO REPLACE ELEMENTS AND TERMOSTATS AND YOUR OVEN WILL HAVE A NEW LIFE .

BROILER ELEMENT WOULD NOT TURN OFF WITH OVEN

I just had the same problem! I would not have known that the broiler was still on, since the red light was off, except that the oven got so hot that the drips started to burn. The only solution was to turn off the circuit breaker.

This sounds like a serious safety issue!

My guess so far is that there is a broiler relay that has shorted in the on position and will need to be replaced. Until then I cannot use the stove or oven.
