All refrigerators get their cooling from the freezer section. I had the same problem on my GE side-by-side. Likely the issue is the damper assembly that contains the mechanism (door) that open and closes an air channel between the two sides and provides chilled air throughout the refrigerated side. That little door often breaks over time thus allowing only freezing temperature air to circulate and not be moderated.

The fix is to get a new damper assembly...shop around for the best price. GE wanted $150 for the part with other part suppliers charging only $85. There's a bunch of great Utubes to show you how to replace the assembly. Needed only a screwdriver and about 30 min to get it working like new again. Real easy for anyone to DIY.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Vegetable and fruit crisper drawers freezing foods

I had the same problem. Apparently the problem is the main control board. According to the technician that came out to fix mine there is a design flaw and these boards are very sensitive and can blow a circuit or malfunction from the slightest power surge. What happens then is that the control board doesn't "tell" the fan to turn on and off at the right time so the fridge and freezer warm up too much before the fan kicks in and then it cools everything down but since the fan isn't running at the correct intervals and circulating the air all of the cold air settles to the bottom which causes the produce in the drawers to freeze while the top shelves get warmer. I had done a fair bit of research before calling GE and came to the conclusion that this was a common problem. So I pressed them and was able to get the fee for the part waived (before I made the service call appointment) which was around $150. The part now has a 5 year waranty which I find funny, because I'm not sure why it wouldn't have that upfront as my refridgerator is only 2 years old. Whatever!! Unfortunately, unless you have indepth knowledge of refridgerator repair there is no way around the service call and labor. Anyone buying a new model of refridgerator (any company) should consider an extended waranty. The service tech also told me that all refridgerators made after 2001 are required, by law, to have an electronic mother board which in all likelyhood will fail at somepoint prior to when you are ready to buy a new fridge!

Good Lucak!

SOURCE: Amana Bx22s5W freezes food in the crispers

I've had the same issue with an Amana BX21TL. In my case, the problem was that the various air flow adjustments were all directing the cold air to the bottom of the fridge, underneath the vegetable crispers.

What I've done to fix this was:
1- Made sure there was a tight seal between the vent opening at the back of the fridge (at about mid-height) and the rubber/plastic duct that directs air to the meat/cheese drawer.
2- Made sure that the adjustable opening at the back of the meat/cheese drawer was fully open.
3- Made sure that the adjustable opening at the back of both vegetable crispers were fully open.

Hope this helps.

SOURCE: Salad in drawer is freezing

Good day,
One user claims that the return air vents or vent located at the bottom rear of the fresh food compartment, have collected enough junk to block the cold air from returning to the freezer compartment. You can clean them out but I cannot verify that solution.

The crispers are located in the coldest part of the fresh food compartment.
This problem can occur when the machine gets light usage especially in colder weather, when the machine running time drops and the air in the fresh food stratifies, causing to cold air to pool in the bottom.

Normal may no longer be normal. Controls by their design will tend to run colder as they age. You might try tweaking the control warmer.
Patience and time are the most important tool you have to work with in dealing with this issue.

SOURCE: Hello, We have an

Overcrowding may reduce the circulation of air within the crisper. To fix this freezing, rearrange the contents or remove some of the food from the drawer.

If food continues to freeze, adjust temperature controls in the refrigerator compartment to run slightly warmer.-------------- Set both fridge and freezer setting to bit warmer setting then regular. Then check, it will take approx 4 hours, to work on that warmer settings.------

Look for condensation or moisture buildup inside the crisper drawer. dry all fruits and vegetables thoroughly before placing them in the crisper drawer.Prevent foods from freezing inside the crisper drawer. Fill the drawer no more than three-quarters full to allow air circulation. Rearrange the food if freezing occurs, so large items are equally dispersed among smaller items to create air gaps.

---------

But if you tried all this troubleshooting and still the problem is same as before, then this problem is related to faulty damper assembly.----------

Read this as follows :-----

The working procedure of this unit is as follows: --- The compressor starts then it cools the freezer section. When the freezer reaches its cooling level the defrost cycle starts functioning. In this cycle the fan in the freezer section starts running and the cool air in the freezer section is passed to the fridge section and the fridge section gets cold. The air from freezer to refrigerator passes from the section, in that section the damper is located. ----------- The damper is operated by a motor. Its a complete damper assembly with motor included in it.--The damper has door.Which closes and open with the help of motor. In your case the damper door is remained open, its not closing.Due to this the cool air from freezer section is running in to fridge section non-stop.Due to this the vegetables and other food in the crisper drawer are getting over freezed.----------In this problem the damper assembly needs to be replaced.---------------

So first properly check all other possibilities, if every thing checked ok,. then its quite possible that damper assembly door is not getting closed. Its motor has stopped working and due to this cold air from freezer is directly running to the crisper drawer, That is causing the problem.-----------

You can get required parts from online sites like: --- www.repairclinic.com or from searspartsdirect online site.

----------- This should help. Thanks.Helpmech.

Have you checked the temperature setting for the fridge? It may be set too low. There also may be an adjustment on the drawer for the crisper that can be adjusted (typically a slide adjustment.

Fridge is freezing food

Make sure nothing fell below your crisper, deli drawer section. There are some air return vents below them and if they get partially obstructed would allow cold air to pool in the bottom of the fridge.
Make sure your freezer control did not get turned up too high.
Also you may want to check with the manufacturer as they did have some issues with some of the bottom mount models exhibiting this problem and they developed a repair kit for them.
