How do I adjust needle depth on my Singer 590 c?

My daughter hit a pin with machine needle, and now I can not get my hook to pick up my bobbin thread as the needle is not going down far enough.

There is an Allen screw on the shaft of the needle bar that you can loosen to be able to adjust the height of the needle. Some machines also have markings as to where the needle height needs to be. the eye of the needle has to be at or marginally below the hook of the bobbin case
on the up stroke of the needle so that the hook can pick up the needle thread and run it around the case
at the end of the machine there is a straight shaft that the needle arm is attached to and the clamp for the arm has a screw that can be loosen so that the position of the needle can be set in relation to the hook

Hi Jennifer:

Do you understand how a stitch is formed on a sewing machine? The needle goes down to its full down position. At that point the shuttle hook should be pointing right at the needle scarf, ready to go past it as the needle starts to go up.

When the needle starts its upward travel it forms a loop... the shuttle hook enters the loop and the bobbin thread is "captured" in that loop.

If your machine's timing is advanced, the needle will hit the hook and break or make nasty thumping noises. If your timing is ********.... the hook misses the loop entirely and does nothing.

So... open up the entire bobbin/throat plate area.... take the foot off so you can see. Clean if necessary. Then turn the hand wheel by hand until you see that the needle is at the lowest point of travel. Where is the shuttle hook?

From there you'll have to use your logic to find the right screws and adjust the hook.

Here' is a Parts Chart for your machine.

Good luck!

Sounds like your machine is off timing, When the machine is properly timed, you should see the hook passing behind the eye of the needle when the needle is on it's upward stroke. If this is not correct the machine will not pick up the bobbin thread. You may have to take it in for adjusting, unless your a bit machnical.

Picking up bobbin thread

First easy thing to check, are you using the correct length needle.
If this is not the problem then somehow the needle bar has moved and the the needle depth is to high or the timing is wrong..
Unless you really know what you are doing then I am afraid a sewing machine tech needs to reset the needle depth and subsequently the timing.
