Try changing the needles, also try adjusting the tension, make sure it's threaded correctly

SOURCE: Elna SU missing stiches and breaking thread

it sounds like the needle hook timing is out. You need to get the needle in the lowest position and measure the gap from the needle to the hook point on the bobbin shuttle. It should be 1/4". You will need to remove the foot and foot plate to be able to see. I use a 1/4" drill bit as a gauge. If you need to adjust it, you will need to remove the free arm cover to the right of the foot and loosen the 2 allen head screws that hold the drive gear. Adjust the gap, tighten the screws and retry. Usually if the needle catches the thread to early, it will make a bad stitch and the upper thread will break. If it catches to late, it will make thread loops and the machine will skip stitches. Good luck, these are a good machine and worth fixing. Phil

SOURCE: Thread Breaking On Brother Sewing Machine

if thread is good quality you may have a sharp groove in your needle plate hole from needle breakage. if so, polish with emery tape.

I have an Elna Pro 4 DE overlocker and the thread keep breaking - I have re threaded a number of times now but the thread keeps breaking - it was working fine earlier today - what could be the proble

Try different thread (black thread seems to be more problematic because of the heavy dye). Perhaps, change the needles.

When you re-thread, do you completely remove all the thread and start from the beginning--there could be a snag somewhere or the thread is looped around something, ie the thread tree? ALWAYS RAISE the presser foot when threading. Give each thread an extra little tug when going through the tension disk--it will sometimes make a little snap sound when it seats. Also, make sure you are threading each in the order specified. Threading out of order will generally guarantee a problem.

There is a slight chance something (thread bits, lint) could be stuck in the tension disk.

If it continues, you may want to take it for service as it could be the timing is off.

I'm having trouble properly threading my Elna 1010. Could you please help? The bobbin thread keeps bunching up and breaking

bunching of thread under the material is an indication of insufficient tension of the needle thread
increase the needle tension until the threads meet at the center of the materialbeing sewn

How to adjust the tension on ELna F4. I started out with the factory settings but the needle threads are very loose no matter how high I turn the tension.

Be sure to raise the presser foot BEFORE threading the upper thread so that the thread will seat properly in the tension disks.

My thread keeps breaking, I have changed thread type but it still keeps happening, as I cannot find my manual could you please help? thanks

I suggest you change your needle and make sure you're using the right needle and thread combination for the fabric you're trying to sew. Also, don't use old thread. Exposure to sunlight and age weakens thread. If the tension on the top thread is way too tight that could make the thread break also.

Good luck and let me know if these suggestions help.
