Question about Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I was recently given a pioneer vsx d 901s receiver. I hooked the dvd player in its proper spots with regular rca cables and connected only two speakers in the front L and R knobs just to see how it sounded. I could see the digital equalizer moving so knew sound was being transmitted but couldn't hear anything. I turned the volume up but had to turn it to max volume to hear anything. It was very low....what is my problem as I have never come across something like this

Reverse the speaker wires. (red to black and black to red)
Also, check any internal or external fuses.

SOURCE: poor sound

You need to connect most turntables to a PHONO input or buy a PHONO preamp. Many newer receivers do not have a PHONO input. The AUX port you are using would work fine for a device like a CD player, but turntables need to be amplified. You can buy an external Phono pre-amp from Radio Shack. I don't know anything about this site, but something like this device should work for you. http://www.phonopreamps.com/tc400pp.html

Make sure that the sound field/programme you have selected is dolby digital not stereo.(On the amp)
You also need to check on the display that is says DIGITAL not ANOLOUGE, as only a digital input, Optical fibre cable, HDMI, COAX will be a digital signal.
If you are using red and white rca connectors, it is not going to work, as this is an Anolouge signal.

SOURCE: Pioneer VSX 818V No Sound

First thing to check is the Speaker Select Switch. It will say, "A" "AB" or "Both" it will be displayed on the LCD screen as well. Second if that's ok, Check the "Direct" switch. If it's on, turn it off. Generally if it's on, you will see a blue light if it's on (most receiver's)

If you still have No audio, hook up your DVD to the "Direct" input and turn "Direct" on. If you have audio then. The DSP chip is probably bad and you should take it to a shop and have them bench it first to confirm. Hope this helps

Sub hook up to Receiver

If the Pioneer has only one sub output connect it via a single RCA to the mono one. If it has two outputs (L&R) connect it to the L&R on the sub via a dual lead.
The other connections on the sub are for those amps without a dedicated sub output.

I can't find your TV model to have a look at the manual. Normally you'd use a 3-plug RCA cable (Red, White, Yellow) to connect the audio and video outputs of the DVR to an RCA input on the TV. Then, hoping you have RCA OUTPUTS from the TV, you'd use a 2-plug RCA cable to take an Audio OUT from the TV into one of the receiver's Audio inputs (assuming you want to play TV sound through the receiver.
If you have no RCA inputs on the TV, you can get an RCA to HDMI Converter from Amazon for $10-$15 to convert the output of the DVD player from 3-plug RCA to HDMI, then put that into one of the HDMI inputs on the TV. Likewise, if you have only an OPTICAL audio output from the TV you can get a converter for that -- Optical audio to RCA stereo -- and put that into your receiver as an input.

What your unidentified TV >>requires<< is the BEST Video from every video source. That would be the DVD, SAT Box. It probably has multiple high-end video inputs, right?

What your receiver needs is at least a basic composite video connection to the TV so you can set it up and manage it.

A web search for "Pioneer VSX-D308 manual" will find the manual.

ALL of the BEST Audio should go directly to the Pioneer. That includes the SAT and DVD player.

Your TV can exist just fine with basic audio from the video sources. And you could still watch it/them without the Pioneer turned of if you want.

I can't find the exact manual for free anywhere but if you download something similar like http://www.retrevo.com/support/Pioneer-VSX-D409-Receivers-manual/id/385ci977/t/2/ it should give you the basic guidance you need.

I recommend

Do some web searching for what the cables are for. It's all basic and standard.

It should work fine. The Pioneer VSX 1019 AH-K has been made so that it can accept 4 HDMI inputs (of which 3 are assignable, and 1 is for the BD player)
If you still have a problem, you can resort to the Official Thread on the Pioneer VSX 1019 AH-K on avsforum. A lot of helpful guys out there, and a very active thread.

No Sound on TV/SAT setting on Receiver.

Most TV has Audio Out RCA jack at rear and it gives same TV Sound as coming from its speakers.
Hook audio wire red white RCA pins at TV Out and plug these pins to TV/SAT input of receiver. Select TV/SAT input in receiver to get TV program sound coming out from TV.
Hope that info will help you.

Hook up

Karri, I do not have the photo of the back, but attached is a general wiring diagram for any Audio-video Home theater system. If you have a Home Theater Receiver, then hook it up as the diagram. If not, hook it up per the comments in the diagram. This is how I hooked up my ONKYO HT system with my SONY Combo DVD recorder and my Mitsubishi TV. One thing to note on Combos, is that the VCR Tape section will not play through the High Definition connections (HDMI, and Digital Audio). You have to use the older method of Audio-Video (AV) cables or the Co-axial antenna cables. You can ask more questions if there is any confusions. Hope this helps you. Good luck.
