SOURCE: I have a gardeners choice
Hi cjmilne83, I will try to give you some suggestions for your problem. One thing that can cause the engine to stop after a few seconds is fuel tank venting. As fuel is being used, if there is no air to replace it, a vacuum will be formed and fuel flow will stop. Venting is usually done at the fuel tank cap.by a 1 way valve. Check the cap and look for anything that might be blocking the valve from doing its job, or if valve is damaged. Try running your mower with the tank cap loosened to see if venting is the problem. (try only if you are ok with it). Fuel tank venting could also be done by a valve installed on the tank itself , usually near the top of the tank. That valve is called a duckbill valve because of the way it looks. You also mention switching the fuel valve off then on and the engine starts. That could also be because of the tank valve, or because of a blockage of fuel somewhere. To check for any blockages, check the fuel filter, fuel lines, air leaking into the fuel delivery system, the bottom of the gas tank for debris where fuel line is connected, the air filter could be part of the problem, the carburetor might need cleaning. I hope this helps out a bit. All the best and good luck. Get back to me with any results you have or if no results and if you have noticed anything else.
