Yes, go on Google and lookup your lawnmower and then on the site ask for spark plug type and check gap size.

SOURCE: I have a gardeners choice

Hi cjmilne83, I will try to give you some suggestions for your problem. One thing that can cause the engine to stop after a few seconds is fuel tank venting. As fuel is being used, if there is no air to replace it, a vacuum will be formed and fuel flow will stop. Venting is usually done at the fuel tank a 1 way valve. Check the cap and look for anything that might be blocking the valve from doing its job, or if valve is damaged. Try running your mower with the tank cap loosened to see if venting is the problem. (try only if you are ok with it). Fuel tank venting could also be done by a valve installed on the tank itself , usually near the top of the tank. That valve is called a duckbill valve because of the way it looks. You also mention switching the fuel valve off then on and the engine starts. That could also be because of the tank valve, or because of a blockage of fuel somewhere. To check for any blockages, check the fuel filter, fuel lines, air leaking into the fuel delivery system, the bottom of the gas tank for debris where fuel line is connected, the air filter could be part of the problem, the carburetor might need cleaning. I hope this helps out a bit. All the best and good luck. Get back to me with any results you have or if no results and if you have noticed anything else.

The chances are that there is a problem with fuel delivery, maybe in the float bowl or the fuel filter is blocked.
Have a look at these tips:

My Troy-bilt lawnmower model number 11A-A2BM711 HAS GAS HAS OIL doesn't start please help its only 3-4 yrs old

You need to pull the spark plug and verify it has spark, my guess is that it has no ignition spark due to a failed igniter unit or pickup coil.

Can't start Gardeners choice 4stroke doesn't seem to have any spark even with new plug

Check for a spark leak. Look for a spark anywhere the spark plug wire goes near metal. A mistake of water might help.

Electrical problem with my 1999 Scotts Riding Lawnmower

If the motor is trying to start but won't try removing the engine shroud and cleaning the magnets on the fly wheel and the two little prongs close to the fly wheel. They might just be rusted and not getting a good electric pulse to the spark plug. Also clean the spark plug wire end that goes on the plug. I use fine sand paper or emery cloth. Your choice.

Good luck and let me know if this works.
