Question about Vehicle Parts & Accessories

90 chevy G20 5.0. Little hard to start. Idles fair, but when driving it hesitates and wont get past 20 mph.

I've replaced plugs, wires, cap, rotor, oxygen sensor, vaccum lines, EGR valve, IAC sensor, throttle position sensor, and map sensor. Vaccum tester shows normal so no leaks there. I put timing light on it and shows good timing. Sometimes the check engine light comes on for a few minutes then goes off. Code 44 for oxygen sensor.

You may have some bad connections in the sensor string causing the computer to go into the limp in mode.

The vehicle is a 1990. I think...After 25 years you might want to replace the O2 sensor. If it can't get past 20-- make sure your brakes aren't locking up. just one brake locking up will cause your engine and transmission to work harder. over-heated brake rotors can swell and cause your car to feel draggy since they heat up the caliper and the piston inside and causing the caliper parts to remain in the closed position creating drag on the vehicle. We can also think about the speed sensor giving the wrong info to your transmission caused by drag thus keeping your transmission from shifting when it should. This can be felt when driving when she begins to drag for several seconds and then jolts as the vehicle builds momentum. This is an indication that your tranny is over-working These are just suggestions.

The back fire could be from the cam sensor going bad. Do a compression test to be sure it's not a valve. The ignition computer can give you a problem too. Read the error codes to see where it steers you to look.
