The TV will not play Mac formatted files. You will have to play the files thought the Mac that would be connected to the TV as a source. It's a smart TV but not that smart....

    But tv says no file

OK. Have you flashed the TV with the latest firmware from LG to make sure this is an issue that they (LG) might have addressed and corrected in the latest firmware update?

Gareth, what model of LG TV are we dealing with here?

CAUSE loadTOCNode(1, 'cause'); During initialization, devices are reset too soon after they are powered on. In this situation, some devices may use the wrong connector.

Solution:

Power Management system can sometimes cause issues. follow these instructions:

Right-click on My Computer/Properties/Hardware Tab/Device Manager. Now look for the Universal Serial Bus controllers tree....then expand it. You should see a number of USB Root Hub insertions. Right-click one of them/properties/Power Management. Take the check out of the box labeled "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

If you still get "Usb device not recognized" in Windows and the above solution doesn't work for you, there might be other causes:
A) USB device worked before but suddenly stopped working:
The following solution might be applicable:

1) Remove all oem*.inf files
=
1. Click start and click run then under the run line type in the command “cmd” (without the quotation marks)
2. In the command line, type in the following (without the quotes) and press enter after each command:

“ren infcache.1 *.old”
“ren oem*.inf *.old”
“del C:\windows\setupapi.log”

this will not work by it self you will either need to buy a computer with media software that will support your hard drive or a DVR that will support you hard drive.
the hard drive connected to the device you have tried to connect to are not smart devices they will not support a stand alone external drive even though there is a usb port.

Can't get a hard drive with movie's on it to play on my tv

You won't unless it's a SMART TV. Instead you will need to transfer the movies to a USB flash drive and check if the TV has the codecs to play them.

How to Play iTunes DRMed Movies on Samsung Smart TV via Mac

Apple makes its digital content too proprietary so that we can't enjoy any content we purchased or rented from iTunes store on any other Non-Apple products. It of course won't allow us to watch the iTunes movies on Samsung Smart TV.

But this will make Samsung Smart TV users depressed if they have purchased or rented movies frm iTunes store. This tip is written to help the Samsung Smart TV users to solve the issue.

Method 1. Transfer the iTunes movies to Samsung Smart TV using an USB port.

If you have a smart tv on hand, you will see there is a USB port on this TV. So we can transfer content via USB port to this TV set. But iTunes movies are DRM protected, we can't transfer it directly. So it needs us to remove the DRM at first. TunesKit iTunes DRM Removal application is a must-have tool for Mac users.

iTunes DRM Removal for Mac Remove DRM from iTunes Rentals and Purchases...

Step 1. Download and install the TunesKit DRM removal software on your Mac
It works with Mac OS X 10.8 or later and the newest iTunes. The Windows version is coming soon.

Step 2. Add iTunes M4V videos to TunesKit
Click "Add Files" icon, you can add iTUnes movies from iTunes library directly. Or you can also drag and drop the movies to TunesKit.

Step 3. Manually choose output subtitles, audio tracks and AC 3 adolby 5.1 surround

If you don't want to output all the audio tracks, subtitles in the MP4 video. You can manually choose the audio tracks, subtitiles or 5.1 surround, stereo channels for the output.

Step 4. Start removing DRM protection.

Click "Convert" button to start removing iTunes drm protection from iTunes movies now. Once the conversion done, you can find the output MP4 video under the "Converted" tab or clicking "Open" button.

The output MP4 videos are totally DRM free and 100% original quality preserved. You can copy and paste the videos to USB now and plug the USB device to Samsung Smart TV.

Windows will not start with a Toshiba external hard drive plugged into USB

Computer starts normally in windows with a windows that is installed on a hard disk on that copmuter. In other words - windows is installed on an internal hard disk of a computer A. If you get it out and put in a computer B it wont work.

To have the things work:
1. First should set in BIOS boot up options first boot device CD/DVD, second OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, third HDD
2. Should boot up from a CD and install windows on an external hard disk (in your case your 3TB Toshiba external HD)
3. Set in BIOS boot up options first boot device OTHER/USB/EXTERNAL, second internal hard disk e.g. HDD0, HDD1

Depends on the format your hard drives in (personally I'd just use a PC with an HDMI cable) and whether your TV supports USB file reading.

I own a LG Plasma 42PQ2 tv and I want to watch movies from an external hard drive through the USB port but it does not show any movie files on the hard drive.

The USB port on the TV might not have enough power to power the external hard drive. Can you try putting a movie on a USB memory stick instead, and see if that works?
