Memory loss in an electronic device can be caused by an empty backup battery. I'm not sure this is the cause in your TV, but I think I'm close.
I do't think a software update can cause this.
Please try to google on the brand and also the model name and put in the line something like looses settings when switched off. Perhaps on some fora, the already posted the answer.
Not knowing your model number or name, kept me from trying this on google.
