My HP officejet 4500 is about 3 yrs old for home use and has been barely used. The scanning head assembly moves all the way to the right and then sticks there while making a pulsing/clicking sound. Is there a limit switch in the motor of the scanner assembly that needs to be replaced?? Any help would be appreciated. Really disappointed in this HP product.

Mark, thanks for the help. Is it possible to purchase a home sensor and replace it myself or is the cost of the part more than the printer? Thanks, Joe

HP offers virtually no parts for inkjet printers mostly due to the fact that selling price is so low that techs can't amke a living fixing them.

In a laserjet this issue is caused by a bad formatter which kills the motor on the scanner. It is possible that the home sensor is not working in the scanner but more likely the repair is going to be more than they are worth. Unfortunately officejet printers are pretty much disposable once they break.

There are two ways to scan a picture using your printer. You can scan by using the controls on the printer itself, or by using the software installed in your computer to initiate it.

If you use the software, your telling the printer to bring the image into your computer. If you use this option, you can edit your photos as soon as they are uploaded.

If you scan by using the controls on the printer, your sending the image to your computer.

Either method requires programming before you can use them properly.

If you wish to use the software, please install it on your computer and let me know when this is done so that I can continue with instructions on how to scan the picture to your pc.

If you wish to use the controls on your printer, please make sure you have an application installed in your pc that your printer will send the images to. If you have installed the picture software on your drivers disk then we can send to that program. If you do not have this software, please go to and download it then install it before we can continue. If you wish to use this method, please let me know that this is your choice and verify that your ready to begin and I will continue with instructions on how to procede.

SOURCE: I cannot scan using hp

Thank Dear, I got your answer.

First, if in your computer install previous scanner driver then first uninstall it after doing that please restart your computer.

2nd, connected your device with computer and insert its driver software in CD ROM. After sometimes you will watch the new window where shows device has found and install your driver. When you watch it then click next and install your driver.

3rd, Restart your computer

It become okay in stead of other major fault in your device.

Hi there

The purge unit, called a spittoon assembly in an HP, Lexmark, and other inkjet printers, is where the print head assembly parks when not in use, also its other job is to clean and make sure the print head is clean and open for printing. That is why you'll find the print head assembly parked on top of it. It also has an electrical pump to milk the print heads and test for ink flow.

The purge unit is a white plastic assembly (on the right side of the printer where the print head homes) that is spring loaded on rides on a rail.
You can try moving it back and forth about 5 times or so and clean the rail with a cleanex and putting a little bit of some light oil on it and then close everything up and try it.

If you found this useful all I ask is call back and just gave a vote, it will gave me some satisfaction to know am helping some one, so I will keep on helping.

Printer not printing at all

Though there was no message to indicate toner issues, I changed the cartridge anyway. That must have been the problem. It works now. The old cartridge was 3 years old and, though barely used, may have outlived its quality. Thanks for writing back.
