Question about Heating & Cooling

1 Answer

I have a Co-Op torpedo heater, kerosene, model C50A. It starts and runs about 5 seconds then quits. There is spark at the plug, and it appeared it was trying to flame but the air was blowing too hard.

Checked pump pressure - it is too high and adjustment screw doesn't adjust pressure at all. There is fuel in the tank and the spark plug is sparking.

I took the back panel off and opened the pressure regulator. The ball was stuck. After fixing it, it now runs at 3PSI. Still won't light. How does one clean out a sealed fuel tank?

I removed the fuel line/filter. The tank is 3.5" deep; the line/filter only extends 2.25". Shouldn't it go all the way to the bottom of the tank? The end is cut at an angle so it won't suction to the bottom, but it seems that the previous owner trimmed it short.

These things are extremely sensitive to pressure adjustments. They usually cannot be set precisely without a manometer or very low resolution pressure guage.

Google reddy heater for a very detailed description of what the adjustments are and how to properly adjust them. It may cost you a few bucks for a proper guage, fittings and a few inches of tubing.

SOURCE: air fuel mixture screw adjustment, forced air kerosene heater

Most ready heaters have a fuel pressure setting on the back of the heater near the fan. There should be two small plastic covers, looking directly at the back, the one on the left can be removed and a pressure gauge installed. The one on the right is slotted for adjustment of pressure. I think the correct pressure for that model is 3.0 lbs.

SOURCE: reddy heater will not fire.

Your problem is most likely the lack of pressure from the air pump. Your pressure is extremely low. Pressure on a 100k heater should run 5psi. At 3psi there is not enough fuel and not enough air to atomize whats there. Bump the pressure up. If it won't come up, then you have an air leak. Test w/ soapy water. Keep your fingers clear of the fan!

SOURCE: pro 110, runs 10 min., blows white smoke ,shuts off

the first thing you need to do is go back to useing K1 kerosene, diesel fuel not only burns dirty but also has a tendency to gel up in cold weather which could be makeing it hard for the heater to draw the proper amount of fuel. To reset the pressure you will need a gage, it should run at about 6-7 psi. you can order a pressure gage from mr. heater online, they are by far the cheapest I have found as they are the actual manufacturer or call 1-800-251-0001
