Furnace won't stay lit. Sometimes the furnace runs correctly but most times it stops before the blower comes on. Intertherm Model M2RC-080A-16BN. Ignightor glows, flame starts and after a few seconds the flame shuts off. Then it starts the cycle again. It goes thru this cycle a few times and then just stops and an LED starts blinking on the control board. I have replaced the flame sensor but it still does the same thing.

The flame doesn't go out as if it is being blown out. It goes out because the fuel supply is being shut off. It acts like the flame sensor is not working but it is new. If the fuel supply stays on then the flame stays lit. The results with this flame sensor are the same as the one that I thought was bad. It seems like the control board is not getting the signal from the flame sensor.

It turns out that the orifices had some soot inside them. The orifice nearest the flame sensor had more soot than the others and it was restricting gas flow to that area of the burners. The burner nearest the flame sensor was not igniting therefor, sending a signal that there was no flame. I removed, cleaned and reinstalled all orifices and the furnace works perfectly now.

It sounds like the flame sensor is bad. If thats not the case you may need to replace the control board. You should make sure the flame sensor is directly into the flame.

SOURCE: furnace sometimes will not stay lit

Check the heat exchanger for a crack or hole. The room air blower is blowing back into the heat exchanger extinguishing the flame. Have it checked out today. Did you get it checked yet? Now. Have I stressed to you to get it checked out yet or have you been overcome by Carbon Monoxide yet?

Why does it start, then shut down followed by 3 clicks?

  • Thermostat calls for heat
  • Venter motor starts
  • Air switch verifies vacuum
  • Igniter sparks, or glows - depending on furnace
  • Flame starts in burner
  • Flame rod senses flame
  • Burner continues to burn until thermostat stops calling for heat
By your description, I would polish your flame rod, it will be a metal rod that is insulated from the bracket that is screwed to the furnace case and it will have a single wire attached to flame rod,

Goodman furnace gmh95090cxac wont stay lit keeps clicking will lite then clicks back off what would be the problem

Hello, if the burners light but do not stay on for more than 10 seconds, I would clean the flame sensor. The flame sensor is a metal rod that is on the opposite side of the Igniter, sometimes it gets coated by oxidation and does not sense the burner flame and shuts the Furnace down. To clean to kill power to tje furnace, remove flame sensor and clean with a steel wool, then reinstall and start Furnce back up. If this does not work then most likely the Igniter is too weak to ignite the gas and will have ro be replaced.

Check your filter to make sure it is not plugged. If it is plugged - replace with filter recommended for your furnace. Every manufacture recommends you have your furnace checked and cleaned on an anual basis to keep itrunning safely and at it's top efficiency. If the filter is plugged or the blower wheel plugged, the furnace will shut itself off. Make sure all registers are uncovered - suppply and return registers.

Rheem 90+ NG Furnace. When furnace starts, draft inducer starts, ignitor glows and gas ignites. Burners stay lit for 10 seconds or so, then the flame reduces for a few seconds then goes out. Main blower...

Check the draft inducer air switch ( vacuum diaphragm switch) If the switch is opening when the burner starts, you might have a blockage on air piping coming into the furnace. Also prime the condensate trap on the condensate drain from the combustion fan. Also check the gas pressure, if your gas pressure is dropping, the gas pressure switch will shut it down. If it's too high the moment it comes on could raise the pressure in the furnace dropping out the combustion fan proving switch.

Good one! Is the flame getting to the flame sensor within the few seconds? Maybe a good cleaning of the burners or flame tray would help. 1.3 ma is enough for the flame rod to tell the board to stay on. Re-do all the ground connections both at the board and furnace cabinet to be safe. Check the polarity of the power going to the furnace. What are the chances the second board is bad?
