How should the first stich in each row be knitted. I.e opposite of what the pattern calls for or pulled off Thank you.

The first stitch of the row is usually the chain that you ended in the last row. The chain essentially builds the height of the pattern to the next row so the stitches are even height from beginning to end. After you have made the chain, then begin with the first stitch in the next row pattern.

So, if the pattern says to knit 3 (or purl 3), that 3 stitches allows the height for the next row.

I have the vintage Brother Riviera 1681, Model F no manual. For STRAIGHT, needle sews only in far left position, but it zig-zags just fine. How do I get needle to middle or right position?

I suspect that the left needle position is the default for your machine. Looking at the photo here, it certainly looks like that is the case. (What a nice looking machine!)

Brother Riviera 1681 Sewing Machine eBay

If you watch this video during the straight-stitch segment, you will see the needle is in the left position.

Some of the older machines were made this way--I have an old Nelco that is left default--tough machine, sews almost anything! Unfortunately, if you want a center-needle machine, you would have to buy something else. (Forget about any of the new plastic machines on the market. This Brother will out-sew and outlast them any day of the week.) On the other hand, this is probably a great machine, and once you get accustomed to the left needle, you'll be able to do anything that a center needle machine can do.

FWIW, a sewing machine whose bobbin loads on the left is usually left needle default.

I am knitting an afghan, only knitting but I am changing colors every 6 inches. Is there a right side in an all knitted item and if so should you start a new color on the wrong or right side.

It really depends on the pattern that you are knitting. If you are doing straight knit one row and purl one row, then usually one side is the right side and the other is the wrong side. Which is which could be a personal choice. Usually the knit side is the right side, but not always. If there is a right & wrong side, you usually want to the color switch on the wrong side. Whatever you do, use the same method consistently or it will look like a mistake.

I don't know how to thread the new bobbin

Look for a manual for your machine. Not only will it help you with the operation of the machine but also with its maintenance (cleaning and oiling) and troubleshooting problems. Older mechanical machines like yours are great machines, but they do require regular maintenance to keep them running smoothly and trouble-free.

You'll need to find out the Model of your machine--usually somewhere on a metal or plastic plate on the machine:

New home combi

First, be sure to have the presser foot in the RAISED position when threading the machine. When threading the tension disks, give each thread an extra little tug to make sure it is seated completely.

Start with brand new needles.

Be sure to thread the machine in the order recommended for the machine--most machines are 1) upper looper, 2) lower looper and the thread tail drapes over the upper looper, then 3) the needles. Pull all of the thread tails toward the back of the machine and under the presser foot.

Start out with the tension disks set at the midway point--this is the general tension for basic overlocking, but each machine is different and they may need to be tweaked to get them where they look best.

Perhaps you can find a manual.

Note--be sure to clean and oil your machine frequently--probably every time a project is completed or more often as needed! Open the looper door and remove the lint & loose threads from inside the machine and then apply a drop or two of good quality sewing machine oil (or Tri-Flow Synthetic Lube) every place where metal rubs on metal. (Slowly rotate the handwheel and watch where things move.)

I have a Bernina 1230, that was a gift from my mother-in-law. I need help creating continuous decorative stitches and I don't understand the user guide directions.

What a Great Gift!!!

The manual is a bit confusing. From what I can gather, it looks like to program, press MEM, select the first stitch, press MEM, select the next stitch...end programming with MEM.

Press "pattern begin" to start and then "pattern end" to end.

If you are interested in joining a Bernina group who discusses all kinds of questions and tips about using older Bernina machines, look for a Yahoo Group called "BerninaThirtySomethings" The members are very helpful and some are Bernina technicians who know a lot about the machines.

Actually, you can also download the 1260 manual. It is very similar to your 1230 but may be easier to understand. Look at the memory instructions there (page 26...). It appears in order to perform multiples of a particular stitch, after selecting that stitch, press the MEM button that many times.
