This is the best guidance I could find about GE/Hotpoint model/serial locations. I don't know if this applies to "old" stuff but then tht would depend on how you define "old". As I was looking around, I found a couple of mentions of ranges built in the 30's with the serial number on a plate on the back of the unit or inside the clock compartment.

Replaced thermocouple

Google "appliance parts" and have your model number handy.

If it's no longer available, remove the old one and take it to a hardware or home improvement store and match it up. Generally they're electrically the same as the ones used on furnaces. The most common difference is the copper tube length. If you don't see the exact length, get one that's longer and just coil the excess.

A Manual for a Hot Point Stove Mod.KS 737KW-4

kitchen.manualsonline.com does not show a manual for your model. Hotpoint's official site doesn't list your model number. Are you sure of the model #? How old is this stove and what country was it purchased? I have a search for information on your particular model going on, but nothing yet. At the above site there is a link in middle of the page to Hotpoint support and the right of that page is a phone# if you don't see your model#. I don't think its toll free. At this point I'm waiting some replies and have no further information. Hope that helps and I'll post anything new.

The Pilot light will not stay light.

Hi,

The problem is probably the thermocouple....that can be replaced easily...however when buying a new one becareful because some of the newer hot water heaters no longer use just a standard thermocouple...you must use their OEM thermocouple.
You have no make or model here, so I do not know for sure in your case....

But I would be very sure that your problem is the thermocouple going bad...

Stoves Q600 single oven heats up but green light starts flashing and oven heat cuts off. Have to switch off at mains for it to respond again. any ideas what teh problem is?

the oven thermocouple is sending the E.C.U. a reading that its ready(as in hot enough) but in reality it isn't,then the flashing green light on the board knows the parameters and they are not met, replace the oven thermocouple and first try this, then if not the E.C.U. could have cold-solder joints on the board or bad signal wires called ribbon cables between the board and any sensors, check all wiring especially small ribbon signal pick-up cables, they do get hot and deteriorate too

Can light the pilot but it only stays lit for about 15 to 20 minutes.

without looking/seeing it i'd say the thermocouple is not getting hot.... in other words it is bad.... replace thermocouple, that is the cheapest route at this point... hope this helps....

I HAVE MODEL GP30 WALL HEATER. I CAN LITE PILOT BUT WHEN I TURN CONTROL KNOB UP PILOT GOES OUT AND DOES NOT LITE HEATER

The thermocoupler is bad.Replace it,or if you can adjust it to where the thermocoupler is in the pilot flame. You know you have to hold the knob down for about 30 seconds or a minute, don`t you?If the flame will not touch the thermocoupler,it will not stay lit.You can cut a piece of copper tubing,or steel tubing to slidde over the old thermocoupler to make contact with the pilot flame, and it will work,if the thermocoupler is not in to bad of shape.

HELLO, WE HAVE AN OLD, SMALL, MAYTAG GAS RANGE. IT HASN'T BEEN USED IN YEARS, THE OWNER LIVES IN GERMANY. THE BURNERS ALL LIGHT JUST FINE, AND THE PILOT LIGHT IN THE BROILER SECTION LIGHTS JUST FINE.THE...

The 'thermocouple' is probably bad ...or dirty. It's the thing sticking into the pilot flame. You could try sanding it off with emery cloth (metalic sand paper) or regular sandpaper. If that doesn't do it, replace the thermocouple.

Pilot light to oven went out

It could be that the safety ($150 to $250) is getting old, or grease filled. It could also mean the thermocouple ($7 to $12) is going bad, or has a bad connection. If the copper jacket of the thermocouple is blackened near the pilot, broken or cracked in anyway, it may not be working properly, as it generates a small voltage when heated, less than100th of an AAA battery, to keep your pilot lit. If the pilot orfice is clogged with dust it produces a smaller, less hot flame, which also lowers the output of the thermocouple. If I was performing the service, you would automatically get a pilot cleaning, and a thermocouple, the safety could still be bad, and confirming this is a 50/50 chance to begin with, but it is a cheaper start. Good luck, ask more if you need too, thank you, an Happy New Year.

Lighting my pilot

If this is old enough to have an actual gas pilot it will have a thing called a thermocouple. The pilot flame burns around this thermocouple to keep it hot. The thermocouple must be hot from being in the burning gas or it will turn the gas off to the pilot. Yeah, it's kind of a viscious circle isn't it? This is where a propane torch comes in handy, but you might do this with one of those butane matches with the long neck. Apply a flame to the thermocouple for 30 seconds or so. When the thermocouple gets hot enough the pilot will self-sustain. Be sure it is the thermocouple it is you are heating up. It is at the end of a rather thin, what looks like a wire but is actually a wire inside of a thin tube. (still looks like a wire). Might be described as looking like a hot dog on a stick in miniature form. the hot dog part being about 1/8 inch by 1 inch. and is in a bracket.
