If the drive has failed, just replace it, so cheaper than the time and expense of a data recovery.

I have fixed this temporarily by going into Device Manager, finding Com Port 1, right clicking on it to disable it (you get a warning message), then immediately re-enabling it (right clicking on it and selecting 'enable'). This fixes the problem until the next reboot. Still looking for a permanent fix.
