If the relay was faulty, the compressor would not start when cold. To test the relay put a continuity meter in the 2 pins for common and start. there should be no reading. Turn it upside down there should be continuity. If there is a capacitor attached to the relay as well, change it as it may be failing. Apart from these, check all else is working ok, particularly the condenser fan and gas level. if all else is ok, the compressor is overheating and siezing and will need replacing.
A "potential" relay is a voltage controlled start component for the compressor. If your sure the potential relay is bad, not the start capacitor or a seized compressor, Order one from G.E. and replace it.
The two stripped black wires connect to power.
Black tabbed wire to common.
Red tabbed wire to run.
White tabbed wire to start.
Looking at pins on compressor, read like a clock. Common clockwise to Start clockwise to Run
HAVE YOU TRY A 3-N-1 COMPRESSOR BOOSTER|? YOUR LOCAL APPLIANCE PARTS STORE SHOULD HAVE THEM. TELL THEM THE SIZE OF YOUR FRIDGE AND COMPRESSOR AND THEY SHOULD BE ABLE GIVE YOU THE RIGHT ONE. FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS ON THE 3-N-1 AND CONNECT TO THE COMPRESSORS. BUT CONNECT THE TWO BLACK WIRES TO A EXTERNAL POWER(GET AN EXTENSION CORD AND CUT IT, WIRE NUT THE TWO WIRES TOGETHER). PLUG IT IN, IF THE COMPRESSOR KICKS OFF, YOU HAVE A BAD COMPRESSOR. IF IT RUNS WITHOUT KICKING OFF, THAT MEANS YOU ARE NOT GETTING POWER TO THE OVERLOAD RELAY TO TURN KICK ON COMPRESSOR. CHECK YOUR TEMP CONTROL INSIDE FRIDGE, AND THE DEFROST TIMER(MIGHT BE STUCK IN DEFROST)
The S terminal should read zero when you invert the relay. The M terminal should be zero at all times through the relay. If you follow the coil wires on the relay you will find they go from the line connection to the M terminal. M meaning main or run terminal. When current is drawn through the M terminal it pulls in the contact for start to the S terminal. When the compressor comes up to speed the current drops off and the start contact opens allowing the compressor to continue to run on the M terminal.
try replacing the relay/ overload you can buy a supco replacement there's 2 of them one covers 1/15 - 1/6 and the other covers1/3 - 1/4 its really easy to wire up and cost effective. any questions don't hesitate to contact by e-mail [email protected]
