Greenstar boiler filter not cleaned for 2yrs. Can this cause blackening above it on ceiling and soot like residue on surfaces. Also a nasty smell/taste of soot that burns lips and makes eyes sore.

Dear Sue,
If it is true what you have asked, please make every efforts to stop using this "boiler" until you have the problem repaired.
The symptoms you are mentioning could be much worse that you might realize.
This might endanger your life.
Whether the filter is causing this, I cannot tell, but it sounds like there is a serious combustion issue.
God bless your efforts.

Boiler without flame sensor

Sounds like the hot surface igniter is also a local sensor. If you unplug the molex 2 wire plug of the igniter, and turn your meter to resistance, I found that it should read under 110 Ohms. If it is over that amount, the igniter may not sense the flame. Replace the hot surface igniter.

I noticed soot in my lp gas oven that had been clean. concerned when it started to ruin my food I decided to run the self cleaning cycle again. My whole house filled with toxic soot. My eyes were on fire...

Normally soot is from a range that hasn't been converted for the gas type, like natural or propane. It may be set up for natural when you're on propane or visa versa. Has this range ever worked properly without sooting?

My old oil-fired Aga has started sooting up and the temperature falls within a month. My oil supplier says a c onstituent has been removed from the oil when it is refined and has given me an addative which...

sooting is an indication of incorrect air/fuel ratio
too much fuel and not enough air
as the fuel has changed in quality so the jet sizing may need reducing or the blower fan needs to go faster
get in a boiler professional or change the fuel brand and supplier

Kitchen Hood

Hi absimp,

I'm Harvey the Master Plumber.

Your question is: You are having trouble cleaning your downdraft hood...you are able to remove filters and clean but there seems to be grease build on the hood as well....The smell is really bad but you can't get down in the hood to clean. Is there anyway to remove the hood in order to clean it better??

The short answer is; not really. But don't be dicouraged yet, you shouldn't have to . There is a brush on a long handle that looks like the kind of brush you would use to wash a glass. I wrap the brush part with a small cloth that is wet with cleaner and just use from above rinsing the cloth as nessessary. If you have trouble finding a brush long enough just go to a plumbing supply and buy a brush made for cleaning the soot out of a boiler. If they know your problem they weill be happy to help.

Black burner

theres no danger.its the residue from the gas.if using propane,it burns very dirty and leaves soot.if natural gas its the same but not as bad.you can simply just wipe them down with water but use an old rag because the soot is very dirty.if using an electric oven/burner the discoloration of the element is from the heat and is normal.also if the oven is gas the soot will eventually clog the holes/orfices in the burner and it will cause some issues.hopes this helps--let me know.
