The most common use is to represent a loss of something, usually money. So if you make up a cash flow statement, debits are negative. In a balance sheet, liabilities and debts would be negative.

When you say "to numbers" I assume you meant "two numbers."

There is no solution.

For the product of two numbers to be 280, either both numbers must be positive or both numbers must be negative. For the sum of two numbers to be -18, one or both numbers must be negative. Taken together, both numbers must be negative.

We can find two numbers that multiply to 280 and add to +18, then simply take the negative of both numbers.

The square root of 280 is about 16.7. The sum of any two numbers that multiply to 280 must be at least twice that, or at least 33.4. Since 33.4 is greater than 18, there is no solution.

If you want to do it the hard way, take any pair of negative numbers that multiply together to 280, add them together, and see how close you come to -18. For example, -1 and -280 add to -281. -2 and -140 add to -142. -4 and -70 add to -74. -5 and -56 add to -61. -7 and -40 add to -47. -8 and -35 add to -43. -10 and -28 add to -38. -14 and -20 add to -34, which is as close as you can come in the integers.

The plus sign in front of a number does not need to be written. However if the number is negative, the sign must be used. The calculators do have a key to make a number negative. It is usually marked as** (-)** where the negative sign - is than smaller the minus sign for the subtraction operation. On other calculators, the key is marked as **+/-.** You must be careful how to use it: it must be the first sign of any expression.

No, you're not squaring a negative number, you're negating a square. When you press (-) 4 ^ 2 ENTER , the calculator is calculating -(4^2). 4^2 is 16, and the negative of that is -16. What you want to do is to calculate (-4)^2 by pressing ( (-) 4 ) ^ 2 ENTER .

On the TI30X IIB the negative symbol is located one button to the right of the decimal place, just below the number 3.

To enter a negative number press the negative symbol "(-)" whose location was described above and then enter the positive form of the number. You will see the negative symbol on the screen indicating that the number is negative.

You're not calculating the square of a negative number, you're calculating the negative of a square. You need to use parenthesis to indicate the square of a negative number.

You're calculating -(3^2), not (-3)^2.

To calculate the latter: ( (-) 3 ) x^2 =

Actually, you're negating a square, not squaring a negative. When you put in -x^2, it's getting calculated as -(x^2). In order to square a negative number, use parentheses and calculate it as (-x)^2.

Also, make sure you're using the +- key to the right of th decimal point instead of the - key when entering the negative number.

You're not raising a negative number to an exponent, you're negating a number raised to an exponent.

If you want to raise -2 to the second power, you need to enter it as

( (-) 2 ) ^ 2

Without the parens, what you're getting is the equivalent of -(2^x)
