There are many books on introductory photography. Visit your local library or bookstore.

I meant the specific of the camera, not how to photograph. I'm sorry for the confusion.

Desktop is full of jpg photos......can this hard drive be used as just manual additional storage for pics only instead of auto backup of desktop as it is set up now? This will free up most of my c drive. I...

Your hard drive can be used for simple storage of all sorts of files. You simply navigate to that drive when saving the file. For example, Right click the Start button, choose explore, then choose the external drive from the list under my computer. You can click on the plus sign to see the folders in that drive, and choose to store your pics in one of those. Or you can create a new folder of your choice (Select the drive letter, then File>New>folder, etc.) and store the pictures there, just as you would on a C drive. See these Western Digital articles for more information.( here and here )
Another option is to create a folder in your My pictures folder on the c drive, and then download jpg files there instead of downloading them onto your desktop. You can do this by changing the download location option when you download the file for the first time (by browsing to the desired location, then selecting it for the file dowload destination), or have your system ask you every time you download where you want the file placed. That will help to keep your desktop clear.

You can also partition the external hard drive, to keep the photos on one partition and the backups on another. But normally you will have to do so before storing any information on it, and if you need to preserve the backups you've accumulated this may no longer be your users manual for info about partitioning.
I hope this information allows you to resolve this issue. If you need further assistance, please post back with a comment to this thread.
If I've managed to answer your question or solve a problem, please take just a moment to rate this post....thanks!

Have you done the time/date setup? Online manual says it goes auto after 4 minutes, but perhaps the date/time need to be setup first? Online manual here in case you lost your book :)

Night Time Pics

Hello Ruby, On the mode dial you will see a setting for night time use, you should not have to change any other settings. If you refer to the user manual it will explain this in greater detail than I have room here to list.

Deleted pictures

There is no way you to mass deleted all pictures by just touching the screen. You must first display the pic you want to delete, then press the Trash Icon, then select yes on the screen, so accidental pic deleting is very hard to do.

I believe your pics are still on the camera, else the camera is defective.

The location on the hard drive that a pic will be stored will depend on the default programing of whatever software you might be using to take the pictures with. That could mean literally hundreds ( maybe thousands ) of different locations, The camera is properly loaded with working webcam DRIVER software still depends on the USER's choice of software to decide how a pic is taken. These pics that are taken can be stored in a multitude of formats with .JPG and .BMG being some of the most common picture formats. You ask a very generic question that affects ALL cameras that can be hooked up to a computer but there is NO SINGLE answer to this question as it totally lies in the discretion of the software that the END USER applies to his/her webcam/camera. In many cases an END USER can initiate changes to the programming of many softwares to force the pictures to locate in areas of the hard drive that the USER decides he/she likes. But the USER himself/herself has to initiate these actions usually in the OPTIONS part of whatever software the USER is using with the camera. That is about as generic as I can be.

Good book for a beginner?

have you set it to macro mode? (little flower icon on the right cursor) this function will allow you to get within about 2cm of the subject, however do not use the zoom as the lens cannot focus close enough. To get results any closer you will be looking at an slr and a budget on a few thousand! If enabling macro and not using zoom to allow the lens to focus doesn't get you close enough in you can always enlarge and crop images. have a look on i've taken some macros of flowers and bugs, this camera can capture the hairs on an ants back or the individual lenses of a flys compound lens eye.

persevere with this camera, for a very small budget you will get amazing results, ISO refers to the speed of 'film', it comes from the dark old ages of 35mm film cameras. Basically a low ISO is the lowest sensitivity to light and gives the best image quality, however as the ccd is less responsive to the light the camera holds the shutter open for longer. The higher the ISO the more sensitive the ccd but the greater the noise and lower the quality of picture.

Books, try looking for more photography orientated books and less digital camera based books. An upto date photography book will tell you all the technical information about how to take a good picture for any given senario.

if you would like any further advice email me (address on the blogspot)

Take it back to the place you bought it and tell them you are dissatisfied and you want a different product.

Call Singer and tell them to send you a real manual.
