You need to replace the valve stem seals in the engine.

Testimonial: "What's the function of the valve stem?"

  • Lawrence Oravetz Nov 18, 2014

Valve stems are the part of the valves(Intake and Exhaust) that the springs attach to. The rocker arms push down on them to open the valve to let air and fuel in and exhaust out. Since the top of the valve stem is outside the cylinder it is exposed to the heat and oil that lubricated the parts of the engine that reside unter the valve covers. Heat and a lot of miles will cause the seals to become brittle and lose their ability to keep excessive engine oil off the stems. When the fail, the high amount of vacuum present in the rocker covers is enough to let oil to be drawn into the cylinders at idle. When you accelerate the oil is then burned to produce white smoke. If your mechanic doesn't know this, then find another more educated mechanic.

Hi I got a Toyota corolla 160i gle and it was parked very long so wen i started it wen ideling no smoke BT wen hit da fuel it smokes and on take off BT wen driving it does nt smoke

Generally, it may smoke on startup for a few seconds then quit and seem to run fine, then you hit the gas and it smokes again, so Is it white smoke gray smoke or blue smoke? Because IMO it's either a bad head gasket, bad valve guides, rings are going bad ot dumping to much fuel into carb or injectors.

White smoke coming out of tail pipe.

WHITE smoke? Or BLUE smoke? White smoke is usually caused by burning antifreeze (possible blown head gasket). Engine oil burning causes a bluish colored smoke.

Changing the oil two months ago means absolutely nothing to me. I have customers that travel 6000 miles or more in a month. Oil consumption is measured in volume over miles, not volume over months. It is normal for most 4 cylinder engines to use a little less than 1/2 quart in 1000 miles (even more than that for 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder engines).

Hi, My Sidekick starts to "putter" as i drive like it's not getting enough fuel. Then when I accelerate it blows large amounts of white smoke out the exhaust. It did this once before last summer...

White smoke always means that oil is getting into the cylinder. This will make the car sputter. You have to find out why the oil is getting in there. It needs to go to a mechanic because it could be any number of reasons why the oil is getting in.

Well, billowing white smoke from the tailpipe is generally antifreeze burning off in the engine, which would indicate either a blown head gasket into a cylinder or a broken fluid passage. In the old days there was a way an automatic transmission could leak trans fluid into the engine and create white smoke too, but that shouldn't apply to your vehicle. Not certain about the noises, but clearly you have some internal damage. You can check the antifreeze level to see if you have lost fluid. You can pull the spark plugs to see if you notice damage to the plugs or deposits on the plugs indicating antifreeze.

Wow!
The first thing you need to do is fill the coolant up again and take it to a shop that you trust, have them pressurize the coolant system to find the leak, then repair it.
But my fears are that who ever check it for you last saw a head gasket leaking and didn't want to fix it so said nothing,Also if your seeing white smoke behind you that is an engine burning antifreeze.
