Tip

Timer Switch Failures

Many toaster ovens use a timer switch to operate the ovens. Many of them use very poorly made Chinese timer switches that make a very poor electrical contact internally causing them to get very hot and in cases will melt connector insulation and also cause wall plugs to get very hot. One in particular is part # DKJ/1-60 which is used in Black and Decker and other manufacturers ovens. Replacement switches are about impossible to find and B&D will be of no help finding one. If your timer switch has only 2 contact tab's on it, you can use this tip to repair your oven. If it has more that 2 contacts, you will need to find a replacement switch or ask a qualified technician about other switches that can be used.
A safe and easy way to fix the appliance is to replace the bad timer switch with a single pole single throw toggle switch. Make sure to get one rated for 20 amp's at 120 volts AC. You will no longer have a timer and you will need to turn the oven on and off manually, but at least you will be able to use the oven and not have to worry about a faulty timer switch overheating! The timers are for convienience only and you have to turn the OVEN feature on and off manually anyway so all you're losing is the timer convienience for toast or whatever and the toggle switches are much safer too. The switches can be purchased at any electrical parts store or at many hardware stores for under $10. A cheap and safe solution to the problem!
If you feel the need for a timer and want to take your chances with a timer switch, there are a couple switches that you can use to replace the DKJ/1-60 switches. They are made for Delonghi toaster ovens and are readily available. One part # is 5218104600. This switch will work the same as the original but it only has about a 15 minute toast timer. Turn counterCW for OVEN ON like the original switch. You may need to use some mounting parts from the old switch depending on your particular oven. Another switch which has a 120 minute timer is part # 5218101800 but may be a little harder to find. Both of these look the same as the DKJ/1-60 and are about the same size with the bell on the back of the switch.

My black and decker toaster oven is less than a year old and it has a burned out smell coming from it. I feel it might be a fire hazard and I am not comfortable using it anymore for fear of fire. What can...

Your problem is very likely the timer switch. They are very poorly made and they have a high failure rate. B&D should have a recall on these switches. It's likely a DKJ/1-60 timer switch. They make a very poor electrical contact which causes the switch and possibly the wall plug to overheat. Mine melted the wire insulation at the switch and failed. These switches are impossible to find fortunately because they are all subject to the same failure. There are a couple timer switches made for Delonghi ovens that will work in the B&D and other ovens that use the DKJ/1-60 timer switch. One is part # 5218104600 which works the same as the B&D switch but it only has about a 13 minute toast timer. Turn it counterCW to turn the oven on. There is another switch with a 120 minute timer which is part # 5218101800 but may be harder to find. The 13 min timer switch can be purchased for $10.98 at Gourmet Depot website. Another solution is to replace the bad switch with a single pole single throw toggle switch rated for 20 amp's at 120 volts AC. You will no longer have a timer and you will need to turn the oven on and off manually but at least you will be able to use the oven and the switches are under $10 and much safer than timer switches.

Needs to be relaced where can i get one the timer switch

Many of these toaster ovens use a timer switch that you just cannot find in the USA. Try smallapplianceparts.com or search "small appliance parts" to find a few places that sell parts. You will need your make and model #. If your switch has a part # of DKJ/1-60 you will not be able to find one, however there is a switch made for Delonghi that will fit. the part # is 05XDE5218104600. The Gourmet Depot website has them.

Toster Timer Switch Broke

I had the same problem with the same exact switch DKJ/1-60. This part cannot be found anywhere but the factory and you'll have to buy 5,000 if you want one. There is another switch made for Delonghi that will work but it only has timer for toast. No 60 min. timer. The part # is 5218104600. This switch works the same way as the original but you will only have about a 13 minute timer. There is another one that has a 120 min. timer. The part # is 5218101800 for Delonghi. These switches look the same as the DKJ/1-60 but you may need to use parts from your old switch to mount these switches. Another solution to the problem is to replace the bad switch with a single pole single throw toggle switch that will handle 20 amp's on 120 volts AC. You will no longer have a timer and you will have to turn the oven on and off manually but at least you will be able to use the appliance. The above switch can be purchased at Gourmet Depot website for $10.98.

Toaster/oven

Could be the timer switch. They will suddenly stop working all at once or work intermittantly. Unless it's a Delonghi you may have a very hard time finding the part you need. If the switch is a DKJ/1-60 you will not find one but there is a Delonghi switch that you can use which you can find at www.thegourmetdepotco.com or www.applianceparts.com . The Delonghi part # is 5218104600 to replace a DKJ/1-60
