Question about Miele CVA4070 Coffee Maker

1 Answer

I cannot get my Miele CVA470 waste container back in after I put the brew unit in. The slide that has the W piece is blocking the waste unit's entry.

We have tried everything to get that slide to go further back into the machine in order to allow the entry of the waste unit.

I was attempting to clean the brew unit when two pieces fell out. I was able to figure out where they go but now I can't put the machine back together. That slide piece is sticking out too far.

It is because the brew unit is not in the "rest" position. Somebody plaid with it or there is a malfunction with the brew unit so it is not in the initial position. Post a picture of the brew unit in place (without the waste container) and I will make my best to help you.

The problem started when I was cleaning the brew unit and this small plastic piece plus wire piece fell out. I believe I put them back where they belong but the slide will not go far enough back into the machine enough to allow me to insert the waste container.

It is OK. I copy the photos on my computer and I can see them the right way. I will check my own brew unit tonight. I think you have 2 different problems. One is to put in place the 2 components that have pop out. The other problem is to put in the "rest" position the brew unit. I will take photos and maybe video to help you if I can figure out how to do it simply. It is a less than one minute job when you know how to do it. Not easy to explain with words...

SOURCE: Brew unit in Miele coffee system CVA615 block

It sounds like the connector or wiring that links the LCD display board on the door to the main PCB inside the coffe maker has become loose or damaged.
This would cause the text displayed to become scrambled.
Its a 26 way connector that is labelled JP16 (on the next model up) and is next to a large IC.

SOURCE: Miele CVA 4075 brew unit locked

Turn your machine off. Close the door. Depress <clear>, holding it down, press <on/off> then let go of both. Then press <clear> 3 times. On 3rd time, hold it until Service menu appears. Select <brew unit> then press left arrow to turn from <off> to <on>. Then press right arrow by <select> This will turn your brew unit drive to the correct position and you should be able to get your brew unit in/out and your waste container back in. Make sure to turn your machine off/on again to get out of Service Menu. I have a picture of how the wire needs to be inserted to get that back on. It's definitely not intuitive, but send another note with your email address and I can send the pics.

SOURCE: when the brew unit open to put the waste into the container, this part of the unit stay open

OK I had this precise problem .. initially I got F73 occasionally and then increasingly more frequently over about a 2 week period. When the error comes up the first problem is that you cannot remove the Brew Unit. The Correct procedure is to enter Service Mode and then you have the option of resetting the position of the Brew Unit. For instructions on this consult the Service Manual which is available online for free ... just search for 'CVA4070 Technical Information'.

Now in terms of what can cause this (as the manual does not explain the reason for the fault in my case) ... at first I thought it was the Brew Unit getting sticky and thus too hard for the motor to return the unit to its home position. The motor is actually very strong due to internal gearing and this is unlikely to be the problem unless it's very stiff. In my case it turned out to be one of the two reed switches on the back of the motor drive was very slightly worn (it wears out because it drags on a cam) and this prevented the motor drive from stopping at precisely the right position during the sequence. This then resulted in the machine getting confused about what state the brew unit is in and so it says F73 . The two reed switches that control the Motor drive are accessible from rear of machine by removing the black cover of the motor drive. I can't recall which one was at fault for me .. but if you operate the machine with the motor drive cover off ... and then reproduce F73 ... you can actually see that it has not stopped in the right place on the reed switch and then you can work out which reed switch is causing the problem (also refer to manual which has a good explanation of states). There are two other read switches in the machine of the same type and these are not critical in terms of the wear issue so you can swap these over for the brew unit ones. Alternately you can buy new ones. It's a simple job just to replace them and the Miele service person would probably do it in 10 minutes. Now problem is fixed.

Now if you're doing this yourself ... you should also do some servicing at the same time;

1. Apply grease to the cam that controls the reed switches (this will prevent wear of the reed switch buttons).

2. On the back of the Brew Unit at the top .. there is lever that has ridges on it that activates one of the other reed switches (grinding amount compensation). Apply grease to this. (This can also stop an annoying clicking sound each time you brew coffee).

3. Apply grease to O-ring on the spout of the coffee on inside of door

4. Clean back of machine with vacuum cleaner and then with warm water .. it get fairly dirty. You can take pieces off to clean more thoroughly

5. If your technically skilled .. remove the Brew Unit Drive .. disassemble, clean & re-grease. After 5 years or so its gets dry and you do not want to have to replace this unit. WARNING: Note position of cogs and the cam before you disassemble (ie take pictures) and make sure you put it back in the same way. I did not do this and I broke the plastic cam .. which is designed as a weak link so that metal gears inside motor and brew unit drive are damaged.

Finally ... coffee machines are high maintenance and even Miele ones break-down. Miele spare part prices are very high but what I like about this machine is that it is designed to be serviced.

Waste unit is stuck and I can not remove it

The standard instructions are ... remove the waste container, water container & ground coffee container. On the front of the Brew Unit is a vertical black lever with a grey press button at bottom. Press this button and turn the lever clockwise. Then press the release catch that holds the brew unit as base and pull the brew unit. If Brew Unit is still stuck then its likely that the Unit State is not in the 'home position' and if this has occurred then its likely that that an error code would be showing. Regards

Have you clean the brew unit with the cleaning tablets? This dissolves and rids the brew unit of the oils which in turn build up and clog the brew unit - the result being watery pucks and less product being disbursed.

A black piece fell out of my brew unit while cleaning it and I don't know where it goes or how to put it back in. Help!

I assume you mean a 5cm by 5cm squarish piece of black plastic. If so this is the part of coffee chute. When looking at coffee machine from the front it goes on left hand side of the brew unit about half way up. You slide it on below the start of the chute on the brew unit and essentially it extends the chute. It can be installed upside down. If it's fitted correctly if it looks like a 'W' when the brew unit is viewed from left hand side. If fitted incorrectly it looks like an 'M'.

It say brew unit missing

The brew unit missing switch is inside the slot at top back wall where the top of the brew unit puts an angled piece of plastic into the slot. The piece is a slope like a nose so it gently pushes the switch as you instert the brew unit. See if the brew unit reaches this slot on the wall. If it doesn't the brew unit most likely jammed up and was removed while the gears were not in home position. Now the gears are not allowing the brew unit to return fully inserted.

If you're handy you can call Miele tech support and request they walk you through steps to diagnose this. They will discover if the gear is out of home position or not. If it is not and the switch is in contact with the brew unit you may be in luck, the swith is cheap. But if the electronics no longer reads the switch signal it's 800 bucks to replace. Good luck!

Your chute between the grinder and the brew unit is "glued" with coffee. Take out the the brew unit, clean it under water. Take a vaccum cleaner and put the pipe into the hole where the coffee falls into the brew unit. Move the bean container "hard" in and out ( knocking inside the maschin to loose the blockage). Switch in the main menue all to factory defaults. Put the grinder "level" into the middle again. start a brew unit cleaning process. After that you coffee must be ok again. Do not use oily beans or coated beans. the block the chute.

Miele coffee maker cva 4070

OK. Here's the deal. I struggled with this CVA 4070 (F 73) problem also recently, and even posted a questions in the cyber world about it. I jiggled, re-cleaned the machine, re-read the Miele manual, and scoured the internet for schematic drawings of this brewing unit's insides. No luck. Finally after finding out I'd have to pay $199 just for a service clown to walk in my front door, I said NYET!!!  I must solve by myself. If I can take apart & fix my Dyson, etc, etc, I WILL DO THIS TOO!!  (MUST HAVE COFFEE>>>)
Pull out the brewer, turn it a quarter-turn to your right, and look at the spot where that small black plastic piece -- shaped like a block "M" or block "W" -- should be situated. Pull it out, if it isn't out already. Don't worry about yanking it out or harming these parts, said the Miele troubleshooter guy in New Jersey on the phone. They're "made from the same plastic used in football helmets."  Okey-dokey.
This approx. 1.5" wide, blocky plastic piece is part of the "slide" that takes the brewed coffee grounds into the waste container. When positioned correctly, it looks like a block "W,"  with the "wings" ointing up, and slides in just under a brown 1.5" flat piece. A small, down-facing tab on the brown piece clicks into the "W" piece and holds it in place. The "W" should feel fairly solid, although it is not rigidly in place, as the entire mechanism is a movable system to deposit the grounds in the waste receptacle.
Put everything back inside your CVA 4070 "love" machine, hit "on," and wait for it to go through its warm-up.  No F73 message?  Yeah!  Mission Accomplished. You, like I, have fixed your Miele, saved your family relationships, and saved yourself a bundle from unnecessary service calls.
