Question about Cooper Lighting AL65FL 65-Watt Fluorescent Area Light Safety and Security Light with Photo Control

2 Answers

What could the problem be that causes my dusk to dawn light to not work when the photoelectric switch tests a closed circuit in the dark and light?

Put new bulb in place of bad. Fixture stopped lighting after a couple of days. Checked breaker, power, board, and wiring. PE shows continuity between load and line in dark and light.

The fact that the photo switch shows continuity in dark and light is bothersome since the whole point of the switch is to break continuity when it's light outside. If the switch always shows continuity, I would replace it.

It is also, as William suggested, very easy to put the bulb in in such way that it isn't reaching the electrical contact in the base of the socket. It is very easy to get the bulb slightly cross-threaded so that, combined with the oxidation on an older socket, the friction gets heavy enough to keep the bulb from going all the way in.

Another, less common, problem is getting a bad replacement bulb. It has happened to me once, I think, in my lifetime that the bulb I put in to replace a burned-out bulb was DOA.

Hope this is helpful. Good luck!

Often times these cheap fixtures have very poor contacts for the bulb itself. WITH THE POWER OFF, you can try to use a screwdriver or roto tool with a wire brush to clean the contacts. Might just be time to replace the fixture.

    Troubleshoot ge model 15086

GE 15086 will not work for 3-way.
There are several timers that do... keep in mind that 3-way timers replace 1 or the other switch, but not both... and the remianing switch must be rewired slightly depending on which 3-way switch is replaced. Sounds confusing, but copy following links for exact wiring diagrams for the GE 15312 timer, and Intermatic ST01c 3-way timers: Easiest to wire is ST01C since it is battery-powered.
Another thing to remember, is that when the remaining switch is flipped in a 3-way timer circuit, it just reverses the timer programming, so dawn-dusk would become dusk-dawn etc.
These timers offer astronomic dawn-dusk function or 7-day programming.

Hello Gerald. Each switch has a function. the the test-1-5-10 allows you to set it to test or an on period of 1 or 5 or 10 minutes. The off-3-6-dusk to dawn allows you to turn it off completely, operate from dusk for 3 hours, operate from dusk for 6 hours or operate from dusk to dawn. By operate I mean turn on and then stay on for the number of minutes you set it to with the other switch.

what's nice about the test setting is that with it allows you to check and b sure that the light will come on during daylight by setting the one switch to test and the otner to any setting but off.

If you leave the 2nd switch set to off the first switch will not allow you to test it.

I baught a 3-outlet timer yardstake #15137. why does it blink on all settings except the on at all times?

Your yardstake timer has photo-eye that automatically turns lights on at dusk.
And then lights remain ON until set-time expires, or dawn arrives.
Timer automatically turns off at dawn, no matter which setting, unless timer dial set to ON
Photo-eye has to be turned away from outdoor lights or lights will blink.
That's because outdoor lights cause photo=eye to sense it's dawn, and timer turns OFF >>> a moment later photo-eye senses it's dark, and turns lights ON again.
    Thus the timer turns ON-OFF.
Test this by putting black tape over photo-eye, or turning timer toward dark area. Timer should turn ON and follow set-time on dial.

Will the HB51R have to be placed outside to work on dusk to dawn.

The dawn to dusk feature is activated by photoelectric eye that senses when it gets dark.
If you put timer in a dark room, it will turn ON ... let's say to operate Christmas tree after you leave a room for the evening.
But if room stays dark, the timer will not sense when to turn off unless you also set timer to turn off 1-9 hours after ON.
That being said, a Christmas tree might make too much light for the timer's photoelectric eye.
Make sure photoelectric eye is turned away from direct light.

My timer comes on at dusk and the lights blink on and off until they shut off 6 hours later.

    1) Put black tape over photoelectric eye on timer.
Photo-eye is small round eyeball that bulges out.
    See of lights stay on.

    2) Turn timer away from source of light so photoelectric eye does not pick up feedback from lights.

It sounds like photo eye is receiving enough light that it turns off, 'thinking' it's dawn.
And then when lights are off, photo eye 'thinks' it's dark again, so lights come back on.

Let me know if this is the answer, because it's Christmas season, and folks have been asking about blinking outdoor timers. And then you're en-route to become fixya expert and boost your GNP by 3 cents an answer.

Put black tape over photo electric eye and see if lights stay on without blinking.

Dusk-type yard stake has photo electric eye, which is visible as round glass ball.
Lights from circuit can cause photo-eye to think it is daylight, so circuit turns OFF.
Moment later, photo-eye thinks it's dark and lights click back ON

Usually 6-outlet yard stakes have 4 top outlets controlled by timer.
Normally bottom 2 outlets are ON full time.
Make sure bottom outlets are not blinking also, which implies problem with outdoor circuit or basic timer problem.
Check circuit with inexpensive circuit analyzer from Home Depot electric department.

Photoelectric eyes go bad easily, but usually they don't blink.
    They stick ON or OFF.

We need clear instructions for setting the timer

    Woods makes several outdoor timers:
    http://waterheatertimer.org/Woods-timers-and-manuals.html

Image that shows with this post is Woods model #49647.
Below are instructions for #49647 timer.

If your timer is different, add a comment with model number and I'll post instructions for that timer.

Woods model #49647 is outdoor timer with photoelectric control that turns timer ON at dusk.
There are 4 possible settings that show on dial.
Rotate dial to make timer selection.
OFF = timer is OFF full-time until you change dial.
ON = timer is ON full-time until you change dial.
Dusk-Dawn = timer turns ON at dusk and OFF at dawn
    2, 4, 6, 8 hours = timer turns ON at dusk, and turns OFF 2, 4, 6, or 8 hours later.

Need wiring diagram for installing a photoelectric switch to turn lights on at dusk and off at dawn. 3 wires, red, white and black.

I am reasonably sure the black wire connects to the black/hot power wire coming in, and the red continues on to the light. I am positive the white wire is connected to all the other white wires. The white wires usually do not connect anywhere on the device, just wire nutted together in the box
