When you make a roux, it is really important to have equal amounts of flower to the water, butter or margarine. You also want to make sure that it is completely dissolved before you put it into your soup. If it's not dissolved, you will end up with bready chunks in there. Also, make sure to pour the roux in while the mix is still hot because if it isn't it can create lumps as well.
