Well HDD can't be repaired literally, but can be fixed with the help of some good tools but if you have lost the data on it, then data recovery services in UK might help you.

You can repair hard drives that can't be read, though it is very tedious and not always successful. In my case I had a hard drive that could not be read and would not even appear on my PC, it just made the noise, tic, tic, tic, etc. The main fault with hard drives that can't be read is the circuit board attached to the outside. They can normally be easily replace by removing a few screws. The important thing is to ensure the replacement card comes from the "exact" same model hard drive as the one you wish to repair. But not only that, you need to get the manufacture date as close as possible, the same month is preferable (e.g. feb 2011). This is information I got directly from a data recovery company. I did this after many months of watching ebay for the same hard drive as my faulty one. Unfortunately, even after finding a hard drive on ebay manufactured the same month and year the hard drive still didnt boot up after changing the card (it just continued to tic). The next thing that can be at fault is the heads and/or head driver circuit, both which are internal to the hard drive. When changing this you need to be very careful to not get any dust/fluff into the hard drive and especially not to scratch the disc platters when removing the heads. I changed the heads/swing arm assembly and circuit and my hard drive worked again. I was able to extract about 95% of the data off it. If you are lucky enough to get the drive working again, get the data off it straight away as it is not likely to work for long. If the PC can see the hard drive, you should be able to extract the data using any number of data recovery softwares out there. Though it's worth mentioning they are very different and not all find or recover data in the same way. So trying out a few different ones is the way to go if you can.

Can you please add more detail as to what the drive is doing, i.e. making a ticking noise, the computer cant see it, has bad sectors, etc?

I Have a Toshiba , that the BOOTMGR is missing,...

This could be a very complicated repair. You should try some easy solutions first. A missing bootmgr means your computer cannot find the start up files on the hard drive. So maybe the hard drive is loose. Open up the computer and check the hard drive cables. Also check the Bio start up to be sure it is booting to the hard drive.
You can also try connection your hard drive to another computer and running disk repair from Windows or other hard drive repair programs.

Do you have any recovery or restore disks? try those.

You can try to install the trial version of http://www.acronis.com/en-us/personal/disk-manager/#additional-features
On a computer and add your problem hard drive to it and try to fix.
Acronis support is great. You can ask them if any of their programs will rebuild your bootmgr file.

Else you need Windows disks. You don't need yours, just any that are the same version as what is on your computer. It is safe to borrow from a friend.
Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation CD/DVD
Boot from Windows Vista installation disc, select language and keyboard or input method, click Next and choose to Repair your computer. Then you will need to select the operating system that you want to repair. In the System Recovery Options dialog box click Command Prompt and type the following:
Bootrec.exe /FixMbr
Bootrec.exe /FixBoot

your HDD may be corrupted, re-installing windows vista is one option. Your best bet is if you have/ can obtain a copy of windows vista run setup and try the repair wizard in the windows vista setup, the wizard automatically finds errors and missing files and replaces them therefore solving any errors in your HDD. you can also try to use the recovery wizard from your recovery disc. best of luck

Hi there,

We wish you a very Happy New Year.

Which is your operating system?
Below mentioned steps are for Vista, assuming your operating system is Vista.
Post back if it is not Vista.

Run it from the Command Prompt of Recovery Options if you have, or a Vista boot disk. You can
borrow a friends if needed as they are not copy protected or make a repair disk.

And/or Run the other diagnostic tools I listed.

You probably do have hard drive issues its only can they be repaired or not.

If you need to make repair disks - these help repair Windows not re-install.

I have boot mgr is missing could you help and tell me what i can do to get my pc working again thanks steve

Hello, there are a number of possible causes for "BOOTMGR is missing" error message. The most common reasons for BOOTMGR errors include corrupt and misconfigured files, hard drive and operating system upgrade issues, corrupt hard drives, an outdated BIOS, and damaged or loose cables.First we are going to try the start up repair. You will need your windows installation disk or recovery disk.Put it on your cd rom, restart and watch for a Press any key to boot from CD or DVD...Press a key to force the computer to boot from dvd.Once it finished loading files Choose the Language to install, Time and currency format, and Keyboard or input method that you'd like to use in Windows Vista.Click on the Repair your computer link on the bottom-left of the Install Windows window. This link will begin the Windows Vista System Recovery Options.Wait a minute to search for your hard drives.
Choose the Windows Vista installation that you'd like to perform the Startup Repair on.
Click the Next button.
The Startup Repair tool will now search for problems with important Windows Vista files and try to repair them.Your computer may or may not restart several times during this repair process. Do not boot from the Windows Vista DVD on any restart
Click the Finish button once you see the Restart your computer to complete the repairs window to restart your PC and start Windows Vista normally.
Now your done and is supposed to work normally.Let me know if is fixed.Good luck

I saw window loading (Vista) on ACER Aspire 8730-6918 but after boot up the screen is blank. I can move the curser point on the screen but nothing display.

This is a known issue with initial releases of Windows Vista. If you have a Windows Vista DVD ROM you can boot your laptop with it and choose to repair Windows.

If chkdisk or repair is not helpful then unfortunately, there is no other repair procedure.

You will have to manually back-up your data by removing the hard drive and connecting it to another computer. After that, format the hard drive and reinstall Vista.

Remember to install latest service packs and updates from Microsoft download center.

This could very well be an issue with your hardware. Most of the time when you get an OS corruption message it is either a virus or hardware failure.

From the hardware failure camp I would look into these items in this order:

1. Hard Drive:
Your files are all stored on your drive and if they can no longer be successfully read from or written to the device this will cause the problem. The Hard Drive is one of the few things in a PC with moving parts and makes it a prime part to fail.

You can go to your hard drive manufacture's website and download the files to make a boot able CD or usb drive that will boot up before windows and allow you to test your drive. If the drive fails the testsyou will need to replace it and reinstall vista.

2. Memory:

Bad memory can cause a huge amount of hard to explain issues with any computer. It is not as common as the hard drive failing, but it does happen.

Go to http://www.memtest.org/#downiso and download the iso image to create a bootable diagnostics disc like you did with the hard drive. This test will take several hours to run, but will give you the piece of mind that only knowing your memory condition can give you :)
If your memory fails the test this is the best case situation and you can simply remove the bad stick of memory if you have more than one stick installed or simply replace it with the same part.

Lost power when installing vista BOOTMRG IS MISSING

Put your vista installation dvd back in the drive and run the repair utility. For complete details see:
http://neosmart.net/wiki/display/EBCD/Recovering+the+Vista+Bootloader+from+the+DVD

From the "install windows" box, click on "repair your computer", from the "system recovery options" select "startup repair".

If that doesn't work, try the "completePCRestore" option in the "system recovery options" box.
