I have a Brother se400 brand new today. When I turn it on it makes a rattling noise when the needle moves. I also have a Brother NV500 cassette threading system and when it starts it is very quiet. This rattles like something is loose inside. I have embroidered with it and have tested every stitch function all is well but this just doesn't sound normal. Would anyone possibly have an answer for this?? Thank you so much for any help or assistance. Best regards, Debi

Debbie the sound you are hearing is the needle width stepper motor initializing. This is normal. Do not be concern.

SOURCE: Thread tangles under throat plate while embroidering

Could the little hook that is stuck over the bobbin area be the thread cutter? My thread cutter gets stuck there and I have to turn my machine off and then try to use the cutter to reset it to its "resting" position.

SOURCE: Brother CS-6000i - the bobbin thread is not coming

Check list:

1 - Flat side of the needle is facing the back of the machine.

2 - Threaded machine with the presser foot up - always.

3 - Bobbin thread is feeding from the spool in the correct direction and through the proper guides.

Lower and raise the threaded needle, holding onto the end of the thread.

If this does not pull the bobbin thread up, the timing may need adjusting.

There is a graphic for doing this as sewusa.com or take it into the dealer for service.

Needle not picking up bobbin thread and it makes funny loud noise

Sometimes both symptoms are a result of a bent, dull, or damaged needle. Try installing a brand new needle.

If it is still not picking up the bobbin thread and making a noise, take it for service. It most likely has a needle/hook timing issue and the noise could be the needle making contact with the needleplate or in the bobbin area. Continued use could cause the needle to break and flying pieces of needle, in most cases, are not a good thing.

You have done well so far. Check the thread to make sure it is not too thick or thin. Also, that the bobbin is not over full. Also make sure it is threaded correctly. Check the manual as you do this. Otherwise, find your warranty and return to shop.

Nv500 brother machine maked a grinding sound and wont stitch it just gathers and knots can you sugest what it might be?

Something is bound up. Stop trying to sew. Turn off the machine.
Take off the foot, take out the needle, take off the bobbin cover, take of the needle/throat plate and check for the reason for your problem. Look for lint, threads caught up underneath and in between the parts.

Clear all that out and put it back together and attempt test seam.

My brand new machine Brother PC 420 is making a clunking noise as the needle moves as if the timing may be off? What is this?

Make sure that your needle is inserted all of the way up, maybe even install a new one, just to be sure. Recheck your threading, with presser foot up, pull top thread, should pull smoothly, now put the presser foot down, pull again, should barely move. If, you are sewing on a bare table, try putting a bath towel under it. If, noise continues, return it and get a new one.
