R and C are the power terminals to the thermostat allowing it to run on 24 volts and not under battery power alone. Assuming that you used the R and C terminals from the propane heater to power the stat and NOT an external transformer, the W terminal on the thermostat then is connected to the W terminal on the propane heater. W energizes the heating control circuit when the thermostat calls for heat. The remaining portion of the control circuit should be prewired from the factory internal of the heater. If you do NOT have these terminals, more information is required for us to help you.

Have model md5tpa Pro-com wall heater. heater will not go out with thermostat, you have turn dial off.

If it worked before but won't work now, you could have a bad connection at one end or the other of the thermostat wire, no voltage from the 24v transformer, or a bad thermostat. Some thermostats use batteries in conjunction with 24v power. Check to see if yours does.

New thermostat requires "C" wire, my old one did not, where should I connect it to?

'C' is the standard abbreviation for Common...meaning the grounded side of the low voltage transformer inside the furnace or air handler. 'R ' is the 24v hot side and 'C 'is the 24v neutral side. Across the two, you will read 24volts.

I have a T1700 in my apartment and my air want shut off and i see a lock symbol on it how do i shut it off

Do you mean a Venstar T1700 thermostat? If that is the case, the Lock symbol merely indicates that the keypad is locked to keep people from reprogramming the thermostat. This prevents anyone from quickly changing the target temperature or the swing temperature (the temperature at which the unit turns on) for the HVAC system. To unlock the keypad, press and hold the Mode button. Then press both the Up and Down arrows. Release all three buttons when the lock symbol disappears.

If the AC has cooled your apartment to a temperature below the target temperature for the current time period, then the control board of the HVAC may be damaged. (It isn't getting the message and has failed in the on position.) Contact an HVAC repair professional.

If the thermostat is indicating that the room hasn't reached the target temperature, then you should replace your thermostat. The thermistor has failed. (Contact Venstar if the thermostat is less than one year old.)

I hope this helps.

I am wiring a Honeywell wifi unit and I used a separate 24v transformer and connected to the c and rc terminal. My system is ac and heat and uses both and rc and rh wire. I wired the rc to the r ter

A thermostat is a switch. It connects 24vac from one terminal to another depending on the request. The 24vac comes from a transformer, usually located in the furnace and connects to the R terminal. Since you are using RH and RC without a jumper between it means there are two transformers, one in the furnace for heating (RH) and one in the air conditioner condenser used for cooling (RC).
Your old thermostat was probably mechanical and did not have a C (24vac common) terminal. Your new thermostat requires power to operate therefore needs a wire connected to a C terminal. I would get rid of the transformer you added and look for an unused wire in the bunch at the thermostat. If it's there connect it to C on the thermostat and to C on the furnace. Remove any jumper from R to RC or from RH to RC depending on your thermostat and connect wires same as the old thermostat.

Blown Transformer heat pump

blown transformers are usually from a low voltage short the first thing i would do is wire a automotive or resetable 3amp fuse in line with the transformer so you dont blow transformer after transformer the wire coming off the transformer that say 24v take that wire a couple of inches down and cut it and install the fuse in series there
24v----------------
24v----------x----------
24v--------{3ampfuse}----------

now you can go through your low voltage wires one by one and test them unhook all the wires to your outdoor condenser at your indoor unit(furnace or airhandler) and try turning it to cool now if you blow the fuse the short is between the tstat and the indoor unit if the fuse is still good leave it on cool and hook up one wire at a time to your outdoor unit starting with R a lot of times your contactor or your defrost board will short out on you also look for pinches in wires wires with cracks in the insulation and wires touching metal this situation can be a real pain sometimes i would recommend calling a hvac company if you start to get stumped
hope this will help you

Thermostat wiring

Thermostat wiring depends on which thermostat you are using. The blue wire is typically used for the 24v common. The red is your 24v power. If you have one transformer you will jump RC and RH.

Honeywell Chronotherm IV Plus requires frequent resetting.

Check to see if you have wires going to a C/C1 terminal. The older chronotherms used a transformer to supply 24 volts to power the clock. If in fact you do have these terminals, then I would suggest checking the output voltage on the transformer, (secondary (24v)side) to ensure it isn't close to dead. Hope this helps

Honeywell thermostat

If you have a forced air furnace with an air conditioner attached make sure you have a jumper wire between Rh and Rc. If the Bryant thermostat had a wire hooked up to C you do not want to hook this up to Rc. Just cap it off and put it back in the wall or disconnect that wire down in the furnace.
