Have never had or seen a microwave not pull air through the vents under the microwave. It's supposed to pull air through the vents on bottom of microwave and blow it out of the top vent grille to keep excess heat smoke from cooking on the stove from damaging the microwave and help filter the air so you dont smoke up your house everytime you make a grilled cheese sandwich. I have yet to find info on how to fix this. Can anyone point me to this information.
Some microwaves vent to the exterior. check outside for a vent. If it is a recirculating model, perhaps the filters are plugged, the vent pathway is blocked (packaging material) or a loose panel at the back so that the exhaust fan air is leaking out somewhere else. I don't know what else it could be unless the fan is loose on the motor shaft and the fan motor is running but the fan blades are not moving air.

There is a diverter in the vent area. You can pull it out and reverse it so that the exhaust blows up and not out into the room. The owners/installation manual will show you how.

I would double check the owner;s manual and installation instructions.
You can download GE owner's manuals and installation instructions here.

1. You have to have exhaust pipe to connect m/w vent and this pipe has to be free from obstruction.
2. If it already connected and good, but air come from vent bar over door, then blow motor on top of the m/w was installed in wrong position ( motor has 2 -3 position depends which way air coming out up, back or front).
3. In this case you have to remove m/w from installation and change motor position.

Sorry to read about your problem, I hope this helps you out.
Well first of all I would take a piece of paper or newspaper, and put it up by the vents, the paper should be sucked on by the vent.. If it does that you have suction. if it does not hold the paper, you should get a warranty repair, i am assuming this new.
If the unit is install to far above the stove you may have a issue.
But long story short, the room vented units, do not really pull much smoke, they pull better on outside venting. you are just putting smoke/steam back into the room, just a little cleaner.

SOURCE: The Charcoal Filter (JX81C) used for non-vented GE
every web page, and the owner's manuel that says theat "jx81c" is the right charcoal filter is wrong. The correct filter is jx81D, is about 2" tall, and 11" wide, and fits in 2 slots across the front, paralle with the grill cover, and right behind the grill. There's a screw in the right slot that should be removed and tossed, as it keeps the filter from fitting in it level.
