I have a Troy-bilt riding mower with 20 hp Kohler engine. Battery was going bad but I was able to charge a few times successfully. The last time, the seat fell forward onto the charging battery and there were a few sparks. After that it was totally dead. Replaced battery but still dead. My first thought is the in-cable fuse blew, but lights come on when trying to start. No problems with this 3 year old mower prior this this event. Suggestions?
Okay according to the electrical diagram the lights are powered by the alternator only when the engine is running so the engine must be cranking. If so then you may have somehow reversed charge the system. If so then the ignition coil would be blown and possibly even the alternator depending the engine setup. It doesn't take much more than momentary reversal to do this. When cranking test for spark at the plug gap while is removed and grounded. If no spark I would think the coil has died. If you getting a spark then check fuel cutoff solenoid on the carburetor to see if it working even a reverse 12 volts won't hurt it.
I am including a copy of the electrical diagram so you can do electrical checks on the system, Good Luck

many of these units use the starter motor as the generator to re-charge battery. check voltage regulator & wiring.
