Currently the touchpad and dvd functions buttons are not responding. The keyboard works fine along with the usb ports, so I am able to use a plug-in mouse.
I know that the touchpad problem has been answered already...but my problem is I have a French computer and everything is in French.

Step 1: Touchpad Not Working in Laptop b> Locate the "Fn" key in the lower right or left corner of the laptop keyboard. The "Fn" key typically has different colored text on it or the key itself is a different color. Locate the function (F1 through F12) key at the top of the keyboard that disables or enables the touchpad on the laptop. The key typically has an icon that resembles a touchpad with a finger touching it or a touchpad with a diagonal line through it. Press both the "Fn" and touchpad Function key simultaneously to reactive the touchpad on your laptop. Move your finger along the touchpad to verify that it works. Press the combination at any time to disable the touchpad again.
Most modern laptops with touchpads offer vertical scrolling, horizontal scrolling or both. These features are located along the right-hand and bottom edges of the touchpad, respectively, and are activated when you swipe your finger along the touchpad edge. Scrolling functionality is nearly always enabled by default, but some users find the feature an annoyance and elect to turn it off. In most cases you can simply turn the feature back on using the Windows Control Panel.
Click the Windows Start button, select "Settings," and then click "Control Panel." Double-click the icon labeled "Mouse." Select the Touchpad properties tab. Scroll Is Not Working With Windows 7 b> Certain computer touchpads have a vertical section on the pad itself that is used to scroll through the page or program window that you are currently viewing on your computer. If the scroll functionality suddenly stops working but the actual touchpad is still fine, this means that the part of the software for the device that controls the ability to use the scroll has been disabled. You can enable it again in the Control Panel. Click "Start." Click "Control Panel." Click "Mouse." Select the "Enable Scroll" option (or whatever similarly named option is available on your specific model of laptop computer). Click "Apply." The scroll bar on your touchpad will now work again.
To fix an unresponsive touchpad on your laptop/desktop XP Home, XPPro:
Reactivate it by using the Function key on the keyboard and the Fn key.
This process is different for each computer manufacturer. If unsure which Function key enables and disables the touchpad, try each one at a time and then attempt to use the touchpad after each one.

Try shutting down the device and taking out the battery for 10ish seconds. Reinsert it, and power up your laptop. Sometimes this method takes 2 tries, but usually corrects the power/allotment conflicts keyboards and touchpads have with HP motherboards.
Have you attempted to use an external mouse? - USB - if so does that work?
if it does - Click on START - Control Pannel - Keyboard (& Mouse Respectively) - Click on the hardware Tab - Select the relevant Key Board, Click on Properties - this will give you a device status - if is is not working properly - click Trouble shoot & follow the onscreen instructions. - If is "Working Properly" click on Drivers - check your driver is updated, or roll back.
If you happend to be on a server and the keyboard and/or mouse have stopped responding - you will need to restart (The Server). Ensure that the Keyboard and mouse are on PS2 connections and not USB - the Severs do not like USB Connected Comms Devices. I have found if there are wireless mouse's &/or Keybourd's &/or any USB connected Mouse/Keyboard, they tend to somehow interfere with each other (i.e. the sever with one of the terminals) - only remedy I have ever managed to make work is restart.
