SOURCE: I am looking for a machine to buy for my home that will give me a great cardio workout. Should I opt for a treadmill or an elliptical?

If a cardiovascular workout is what you want, you should get an elliptical machine. They give you a total body workout - with handle bars for your arms and pedals for your feet. You can burn a lot of calories without having a lot of heavy impact on your joints.

SOURCE: What is it about an elliptical machine that allows you to get a good cardio workout while putting barely any pressure on your joints?

Thanks to the motion of the foot pedals that allow your feet to move without lifting/pounding, your knees and hips take far less of a strain in comparison to using a treadmill.

Do elliptical trainers have adjustment qualities?

Yes. Most trainers have adjustments for elevation. The elevation feature on an elliptical doesn't make the workout harder; instead it changes the emphasis so that the higher the slant, the more your glutes and hamstrings will be worked out; whereas the lower positions emphasize more on your quads and calves.

What do the arm handles do, in terms of a workout, on an elliptical machine?

By using your arms, as well as your legs, you will use more muscles to create movement; thus increasing your cardio workout. By using the arm handles, you will essentially burn more calories.

In what way is an elliptical trainer different from a treadmill?

Treadmills have a moving belt while elliptical trainers have two foot pedals guiding movement - making it more controlled and safer. Elliptical trainers also have handles, in which the user has the option to move their arms in opposition to their legs to better control movement.
