Hello Steve;

My name is Peter. I am a retried field service refrigeration technician.

You are not locked into the unit defrost mode. When a unit goes into defrost every 8-10 hours for 20-30 minutes, your defrost heater activates, and everything shuts down except for the light.

Lets check it out, possibilities:

1.) You may have a bad temperature sensor. You have two temperature sensors. They are both identical, part number WR55X10025. They cost about $11.00. After you cut the sensor wires off you must splice the new sensor in. These are #203 & #605 on the diagram. Sensor #605 is on the freezer right side wall. It is housed between #634 & #632. There is only 1 screw that you have to remove to access the sensor.
Be extremely careful, before replacing unplug the refrigerator. The evaporator coil fins are razor sharp. This sensor must be position exactly where the old sensor was.
For the small cost of these sensors, it may be worth the effort before you purchase a new refrigerator.

UNLESS:

2.) You may have a restriction or a refrigerant leak. You are feeling cool air because, with a restriction, in the back of your freezer where your evaporator cooling coil is, with a restriction you will have ice built-up in the upper right on the cooling coil. With a refrigerant leak, only part of your cooling coil will have a frost pattern.
There are just a few screws holding you freezer back cover. Slide the freezer rack either to the right or left. Lift up on the opposite side to remove. Having removed the cover. Lean the cover against the back. Close the freezer door. Wait 30 minutes, pull the back cover off and check your frost patter.

You will have to copy the last image and paste it so you can better read the image

SOURCE: warm frigerator

Sounds like a defrost problem. Check to see if there is any frost buildup in the back wall of the freezer. If so, it is not defrosting as it should.

  • possible causes:
  1. bad defrost timer
  2. bad defrost heater (in freezer)
  3. bad thermo switch in freezer
If you don’t know what these are then unplug the machine and let the ice melt in the freezer overnight with the door open. Then try it the next day, if is cooling fine then you need to have a service person replace one of the above items.
if you already checked this and think it is a different problem then let me know, i will help you figure it out.

Check the compressor.
Unplug for 15-20 min. plug it back in and listen for the compressor to start. You will have to be behind the ref to listen and make sure you hear the compressor start and not just a fan running. If you hear a clicking noise then the compressor relay is bad.

Help my frig is dying! The freezer compartment is working fine-but the frig compatment is nit colloing at all! What is wrong?

If the freezer is working that is a good sign. Here are what might be the problems; 1) Ice build up in the freezer will block air flow to the refrigerator and thus causing it to get warm and stay warm. If you observed a build up of ice in the freezer, it means that your defrost heater and/or your defrost thermostat is bad. In any case, replace both.
2) The evaporator fan plays an important role in circulating cold air in both freezer and refrigerator compartment. Listen for the evaporator fan and make sure that is running. If you can hear it, it has gone bad and will have to be replaced.
3) if any of the above applies, the lower or upper air dampers may be obstructed. Check and make sure that they are open.
4) Too much food or stuff in the freezer may also be the culprit. If there is too much stuff in the freezer, you might want to remove some them to make way for air to flow in the refrigerator compartment.
I hope this will help solve the problem. Do not forget "Feedback"

Oklahoma Freezer cold fridge warm fan gets Ice build up !

You should not have to manually defrost. Your auto defrost system is not working. Check the timer usuall in the frig compartment near the thermostat ( a small hole, use a screwdrive flat tip 1/4" to rotate the timer till it clicks starting the defrost cycle) check freezer in 10-15 min should be defrosted if not you will need to check the heater and thermostat located behind the rear or bottom panel of the freezer.

The defrost timer could be under the box in the front behind kick panel or in the rear by the compressor.

Frig too warm, freezer too cold

if there is ice build up you have a defrost problem. either the heater bimetal thermostat timer or evap fan could be bad. you could also have a stopped up drain. if the coils get too much ice build up the air wont beable to travel through them and the bad air flow will cause the fridge to become warmer

Bad defrost timer, most likely. It is not defrosting the evaporator, and therefore, no air can be passed over it. Hope this helps

Refrigerator on the fritz

The defroster is not working. Ice build up prevents cold air from the freezer chest from blowing into the lower part.

The way the defroster works is this: There is a defrost timer, probably found under the refrigerator at the front, that turns on the defroster three times per day or so. That turns on a heater nested among the freezer coils. It keeps heating until the defrost thermostat gets warm; then it quits defrosting.

I think your defrost timer doesn't turn. You can turn it with a screw driver till you hear a click. Now your ice compartment should be defrosting. With ice buildup it may need lots and lots of defrosting. You might not get cooling back into the lower part for awhile, till the ice buildup melts.

By the preceding, you should know if the defrost timer needs replacing.

If you should need to manually defrost the freezer coils, they are, I think, under the floor of the freezer. To defrost them, I'm told, a hair drier works better than boiling water. The defrost thermostat is in there too, a one inch unit with two wires. It should have no continuity warm, closed circuit frozen. If it has open circuit frozen, that would be your problem.

Duct from freezer to frig is blocked with ice, frig warm

give the unit a full defrost then unblock the drain hole. it sounds like the tiny defrost heater element may not be working and is therefore causing excess frost to build up on the freezer evaporator. also check door seals are not holled anywhere.
