As previously noted, I removed the screws from the coffee caddy and was able to check the interior. The folks at Phillips were actually very helpful and suggested that I check the chute for a back up of excess grounds. Sure enough, there were grounds in there. However, the "bin empty" message kept coming on, so I took the machine to my local authorized Saeco repair. I mention this because the owner advised me to beware of "oily" beans that will cause this sort of back up. I did end up replacing my grind mechanism and having the machine cleaned for a nominal $155.

If the machine at some predetermined time is not filled with ground coffee a volumetric container it stops.
1. Check if the knives rotating.
2. Look if the ground coffee falls in grup while it is milling. If you left the volumetric tank open.
3.Maybe the knives mechanism is not at the right possition.

Testimonial: "Thanks for your input. As previously noted, I did remove the screws from the coffee "hopper" and cleaned the residue. When this didn't help, I contacted Phillips. The Phillips CS agent was actually quite helpful and he suggested that I check the chute from the hopper. As it turns out, the authorized Saeco repair rep did find a lot of ground coffee in the chute---he blamed this on "oily" coffee beans. He also told me that it was good that I did not try this myself, as I was going to turn the machine on its side to clean the chute which would have led to residual water leaking into the inner workings of the machine, causing real damage. To make a long story short, the grind mechanism is being replaced and the machine overhauled for a very nominal $155...not bad for a machine that's run well for nine years without a single repair!"

The user manual doesn't discuss cleaning the grinding unit. Should this be done and if so how is the best way to do this?

The easy way is to push the lever below the bean hopper to the 7 and make 2 coffee's. Then when the grinder is grinding on the second coffee, pull the lever back to where it was. The coarse grind that you get with the lever bqck works like a cleaner and removes fine particles that accumulate in the grinder. If you are using a shinny bean do it twice before pulling the lever back.

The coffee grinder on my Magic Comfort Plus is not grinding the coffee. The grinder is spinning but not grinding the beans

Hi Sounds like you have a blockage in you grind passage. Try removing the brew group. Then inside on the roof of the machine where the brew unit was setting there is a drop chute where the coffee is dropped into the brew unit. From the left side of the drop chute pull down and back, and it will drop coffee. This will clear an opening that relieves pressure on the passage. There is a passage inside the drop chute area that goes to the grinder. Vacuum it out. It will be on the right side of the drop chute. Once that is cleared go to the bean hopper. There is a lever under the bean hopper. Push the lever back to the largest number. You can push the lever to a larger number any time, but it has to be grinding to pull to a smaller number. Now replace everything and make your coffee. Once you have made your coffee you can pull back to a number that was higher than the one you had it on, but only when the grinder is running.

It seems to be grinding too many beans

Try adjusting the little sliding lever in the bean chamber, towards the minus you can also adjust the grind a little finer.

Hello. I have a saeco vienna superautomatic

This happens due to condensation caused by steam developed at the end of the grinding cycle. Make sure that the grinding chamber is completely cleaned and dried before using the grinder.

  1. Turn the whole bean chamber to the right until it can be lifted off the base. This will allow you to clean the grinding wheel. NOTE: Never use water or liquid for cleaning the lower grinding section of this appliance.
  2. Clean interior recesses with a soft brush (not provided).
  3. Wash the whole bean chamber and lid and the ground coffee chamber and lid in mild detergent and water. These items are only dishwasher safe on the top rack of your dishwasher. Wipe exterior with a damp cloth. Do not immerse mill in water or any other liquid or place in dishwasher. Use only non-abrasive cleaners to remove stains.
  4. After completely drying, replace whole bean chamber. Important: when replacing whole bean chamber, screw on completely before setting grinding rate. Turn chamber clockwise (as viewed from top), until it will not turn. Fill with whole coffee beans for grinding and replace lid.
  5. Replace ground coffee chamber and lid, making sure it snaps securely into place.

Make sure you not get any water in the grinder, if you got water in the grinder then you have to clean it.

You can try to set grinding to coarse and try to make 3 cup of coffee.
