what software do you use? Yahoo Messenger, Windows Live Messenger, Skype?

please check from the settings of the program you are using if your webcam is selected as microphone/audio input. the system default is always your audio driver that is why the camera hardware(mic) is not used. go to audio settings and select the webcam model as your audio input.
