SOURCE: lights on at the power supply but display doesn't light up and no stair resistance.

Remove the cover on the side where the power cable goes in. There is a connector on the inside there. Inspect the wires going from the inside cover to the alternator. Sometimes the wire pulls out of the connectors. Other than that you will need to troubleshoot all the wires with a meter and see where your power is getting lost.
A good tech support line is National Gym Sypply if you know how to use a meter, know the names of the parts, these guys can help.

Console Software Upload for SM916 Stepmill

About This Video

This video covers verifying the software version and uploading software on the Stairmaster SM916 Stepmill. Tools Needed: FISP or Dongle (software uploader), Phillips Screwdriver
Using the Machine Status code (Level Up, 4, ENTER) you want to verify the current software version. This console shows to have software version 18 (last 3 digits from CONS number) and most current version available is 21.
Remove the small cover from the back of the console using the Phillips screwdriver. This will allow access to the port to which you will connect the FISP or Dongle (software uploader).
Before connecting the FISP, inspect the connection area and ensure the pins are not bent. If any pins are bent, gently and carefully straighten the pins ensuring they are in proper alignment.
Now connect the FISP or Dongle (software uploader). The FISP/Dongle is equipped with a gray ribbon cable that will only allow for connection to the port one way. There is a red line that runs along the ribbon cable, and when connected properly; the red line faces toward the bottom. Take care not to bend the pins when making the connection.
Once connected, the software uploader will begin is process. An orange light will come on and begin flashing on the FISP/Dongle. This indicates that the software is uploading. CAUTION: Never disconnect the FISP/Dongle when uploading software. This can result in the console becoming unusable. After a few moments, the flashing light will come up green for PASS or red for FAIL.
Once the upload has finished, disconnect the FISP/Dongle and reinstall the access cover.
It is now time to configure the console. Press any key on the console and it will display NTM CONFIG RQD. It is necessary to configure the console so that it knows the equipment type on which it is being used. Press Level Up, 8, ENTER. CONFIGURATION will appear on the screen. Press ENTER. Press Level Up to scroll to the CHANGE MACHINE menu option. Select CHANGE MACHINE by pressing ENTER. NTM CONFIG RQD will appear again. Press Level Up or Level Down to find the proper unit type. In this case STEPMILL should be selected and press ENTER. The console will flash, and then it will display the saved equipment type and resets the machine for a workout.
Important Note: Anytime you are updating software or reconfiguring a machine, any data stored in the machine will be lost. It may be necessary to log any pertinent details prior to updating your software or reconfiguring the console.

Tip

Too Much Resistance on Stepmill

The first step in troubleshooting too much resistance or constant resistance begins with the lower board. You will want to first verify that the Field LED is lit on the lower board. As shown in the video, the Field LED is off initially, when the steps are engaged it lights up, after about 5 seconds the light should go off. If the Field LED stays lit during a workout or after a workout is completed, this is a sign that the console is faulty. There is constant power being supplied through the console keeping a full load and causing no change in resistance. If the Field LED remains lit, the console needs replaced.

Resets after begin

My Stairmaster unit seems to work in manual mode, but resets when I select a program. What is wrong? It is possible that the console on your Stairmaster unit may not be configured for the appropriate machine. This can result in the console accepting and allowing a manual workout but not accepting or allowing a program. Stairmaster Units Works in Manual Mode but Not in Program

With everything that you have tested and the relay board testing okay, this sounds like the console is the problem.

Will not speed up

ensure all wiring connections are tight . go through your manual and verify all settings for your machine. make sure the console is programed for the stepmill and not another machine as this console is used on many other types of machines .check the console keys by entering the appropriate code from the manual to ensure a key is not "stuck" and all are ok. if still an issue then check your alternator by entering the appropriate code into your console from the manual
