It could be a door switch but check the connectors on the control board. It sounds like there is an intermittant connection on the board. It may also be possible that one of the thermal cutoffs has a bad connection or is tripping.

Cannot set time on clock

If the touch pad is a separate unit from the main circui board, then I'd check all connections between the two (ribbon connector or something similar).

On some units, the clock will not set if the door is open. The same condition can exist if you have a defective door switch.

The touch pad itself may be bad.

You can also try unplugging the unit for a few minutes to clear the microprocessor.

Inconsistent power

If it's totally dead, the main fuse may have blown. However, since it was inconsistent before it went dead, it might lead me to think that you have a loose connection. Sometimes they heat, lose continuity, and then work again when they cool. A defective thermal protector might also cause this.

I have a GE profile spacemaker xl 1800 microwave. I used it once this morning but then upon a second use some time after, there was nothing on the display, as if power was lost on it. I opened the door and...

The door switch may have become defective, cutting off power completely. When the oven restarts, it prompts you to set the clock just as it would if there had been a power interruption. It is possible that something has failed in the control logic and that probably will require attention from a repair technician.

Frigidaire FMV156DC 950 Microwave sometimes stops heating

This sounds like a common primary interlock switch. Need to check and or replace both door switches. DISCHARGE high voltage components first with no power applied prior to touching anything in the unit. Failure to discharge High Voltage Components can result in death

Emerson Microwave MW8115SS --

I would suggest you check the door switches inside the microwave oven just below the keypad, rectangular in shape. The switches are normally open or closed, set meter to ohms, unhook lead from one side and test with door open and closed. If readings are the same both ways the switch is defective. "check all switches"

DOOR CATCH NOT CLOSING, FEELS LOOSE. ELECTRONICS STILL WORKING - JUST SHOWS 'PLEASE CLOSE DOOR'. NOT SURE IF WORTH A REPAIR OR BUY NEW.

Most likely it is a mechanical problem with door safety switch. Unplug the unit from power! If you take the cover off, you will be able to determine if switch is defective by using ohm meter. You may be lucky and find a broken door latch or loose switch holder - look for lose plastic parts. !!! Do not attempt to bypass safety switch.

Can't find the power loss in microwave after fuse, switch check.

Sounds more like the transformer could be bad. Very easy to check. See my tip at http://www.fixya.com/support/r4318968-check_high_voltage_transformer_in . Let me know if you need more help.

Microwave won't operate

This is usually caused by either a bad door switch, a loose door switch mount (which are pretty simple problems to fix) or occasionally a problem on the control panel.

Even though a door switch clicks, it may still be bad inside. Its continuity must be checked.

Door switch or mount trouble can be caused by slamming the door or by opening the door while it's cooking without hitting the Stop pad first.

There are plastic mounts inside the microwave which hold the door switches and onto which the door latches lock when you close the door.

The screws on these mounts may be loose. If they get too loose, the switches will not be activated properly.

Sometimes it's a broken tab on the switch holder, allowing the switch to rotate just out of position. This tab can be hard to see, since it is under the bottom edge of the switch.

One test that sometimes helps is to gently lift up (and/or push down) on the door or handle as you try to start it. If it works or tries to work, then it's a door switch mount or door alignment issue.

If you or someone you know decide to look into it, we have critical information on safety, disassembly and door switches at our site, and our link is at our listing here on FixYa:.

You can find helpful exploded view diagrams and order parts by entering your full model number here.

There may also be a "mini-manual" hidden inside the unit behind the control panel or hidden on the left side behind the grille, which is very helpful when troubleshooting & testing.

If you only need a switch, you can order one from us for $5 postpaid.

If you think the problem is on the control panel, we repair these nationwide by mail for $39.95 postpaid in most cases.

We're happy to help you with free advice and we'd appreciate your thoughtful rating of our answer.

Oven turns on by itself when boiling water on stove!

Sounds like a mis-aligined, or defective door switch. I would suspect defective.
