The collar of the chuck should pull back releasing it. You will have to pull back the chuck and pull the bit at the same time.

Check that you have removed all the bits from inside the spindle. Also check to see if you can see inside the spindle two fins inside the spindle (they provide the drive for the bit. Make sure that you have not lost the ball from the chuck assy and rebuilt it correctly.
