How do I balance the voltage of the 3 phases L1-N, L2-N and L3-N?

The voltage in my generator is unbalanced. I tried to correct the load but, anyway, the three phases are still unbalanced. One is even overloaded. Thank you in advance, Fernando

If you are measuring unbalanced voltage when the unit is running but unloaded, the problem most likely is in the generator windings. One of the windings could possibly be shorted or failing.

    You are right. He needs however to describe the load type and with the most details possible so I can help with balancing the load. When you figure out which electrical component are either single phase or 3 phases, you will figure out where to plug them. Any 3 phase device is never an issue as it will balance itself out. If you are using spyder-boxes for example, it is crucial that you know (with a meter and maybe a friend with a CB) which is which...It really is a hit and miss to balance it out. I prefer 3p connectors and panels right to the last point of the circuit where it splits down phase per phase. Hope youre following :)

If you are using a Manual transfer switch, then you should manually operate the system. Why don't you use the switch it came with? Why would you use a 200a manual transfer switch on a 17kw generator? The idea is to move your critical circuits into the transfer switch panel. Then it would operate in auto.

There is no way to adjust voltage on just one phase. I would check voltage sensing leads and check to see if there is a way to calibrate. Otherwise it sounds like a logic problem.

If you Google your question you will discover a great deal of information including the theory and practice of 3-phase star and delta power generation with and without neutral and some youtube videos about measuring the voltage.and some valuable safety information.

Safety is paramount due to the high voltage available between phases.

Briefly, the voltage is measured with reference to neutral or ground on all three phases and averaged to discover the supply voltage.

Next the voltage between phases L1, L2 and L3 are checked and these should be identical or within a few percent of being identical.

How do i rewire a broomwade 3 phase compressor 1970


Rewire for ?? High voltage motor wiring is L1-T1, L2-T2, L3-T3, T4-T7, T5-T8, T6-T9. Low voltage is L1-T1-T4, L2-T2-T5, L3-T3-T6. The motor protection overloads will need to be sized accordingly, to the motor's FLA ( full load amps) for the voltage used. The control needs to be looked at also, if there is a control transformer, the transformer needs to be wired or repaced for the new supply power voltage used.

E.uPh due to the ripple detection of the DC bus. This is typically caused by a missing phase on the input side of the inverter.

Measure your mains voltage L1-L2, L2-L3, L1-L3 and L1-ground, L2-ground, L3-ground to verify that your supply voltage is balanced and withing the rated specifications.

If the applied voltage is good then there is a problem with the input stage or the DC bus and the unit will need to be repaired or replaced.

I need to wire up a 3 phase compresser motor, 9 wires wired 480, to change to 240 volt hookup. right now it is wired 3 motor wires to each hot, no nameplate or wiring diagram.


Please verify the existing connections to determine if they fit the "High Voltage" configuration listed below. If they do (and they should), the "Low Voltage" configuration below is then correct for 240.

First remove any loads, is the voltage still unbalanced? If not check the grounding of the load, if yes check generator N/G leads are tight. Check the stator windings to make sure they are in tolerance for L1 L2. If you need help let me know. This unit probably has a reactor, so check for any loose connections. Also check the diodes, you may have to lift one end out of circuit to test properly, or else your meter will not read correctly

Back up generator 240 volt output is off balance?


So there is a problem. Where are you measuring voltage?
Say there is L1 - N - L2. Line1 to Neutral is 120 volts, Line2 to Neutral is also 120 volts, Line1 to Line2 is 240 volts. N or Neutral ( the grounded conductor ) is center tap between line 1 and 2.
With this system, the N wire carries the unbalanced load in amperes .
Now we are talking of L1 and L2 and amperes. When L1 and L2 are conducting 10 amperes each, N carries 0 amperes, Line1 and L2 are balanced. When L1 carries 10 amperes and L2 carries 5 amperes, Line1 N carries 5 amperes, the difference of L1 and L2. This is normal.
When there is a problem with a loose connection on N, there is a resistance and will not carry the unbalanced load normally, the voltages will Chang's under load, the problem will worsen with time, a fire hazard, connected loads may burn up from excessive voltage or not work at all.
Bottom line: Make sure the N line ( white wire ) is tight at every connection and inspect for overheating damage. You may have to open the generator connections panel to check there too.

The terminals you listed are correct.
T4 -T7 mated
T5 -T8 mated
T6 -T9 mated
10, 11, 12 combined connection

L1, L2, & L3 = output / line leads

However you should have 277 VAC line to ground and 480 VAC Line to line (Across any 2 phases)

So terminals 1, 2 or 3 to ground should be 277 VAC (L1 L2 or L3)
1-2 or 1-3 = 480 VAC
any combination of
1 , 2, or 3 to each other = 480 VAC

As a "generator man" with 19 solutions one being "You might have to sting it" you should know this and be able to use the diagram on the power head to get your desired voltages unless the wiring data plate is missing. I have had to dial in voltage regulators when switching between 240 and 480 to prevent automatic shut downs from over / under voltage.

Assuming that the motor has 9 leads and the wire numbers are still on the wires, for 240 volt 3 phase connections:

Connect T1, T6, and T7 together with L1 (A phase)

Connect T2, T4, and T8 together with L2 (B phase)

Connect T3, T5, and T9 together with L3 (C phase)

If you're not sure which of the incoming wires from the supply are L1, L2, and L3, just pick one. If the rotation is wrong just swap any 2 (TWO) phase wires.

motor leads on a three phase are T1, T2, T3, T4, T5, T6, T7, T8, T9. for high voltage [480] L1 to T1, L2 to T2, L3 to T3, connect together and tape - T4-T7, T5-T8, T6-T9. For LOW voltage [240] L1 to T1 & T7 & tape, L2 to T2-T8 & tape, L3 to T3 & T9 & tape. T4-T5-T6 together and tape.
