There is no universal answer to this question. As a general rule, most wall mountable television sold today use M5 bolts, but these vary in length. Does your television current use bolts to attach to its stand, if so remove one and use it as a guide, compensating for the difference in thickness of the new mount and the current stand.

Mount screw size

You will need metric hardware (M4, M3, etc.) but you also need to know the length in millimeters to adequately secure your TV. I can't believe that Hitachi cannot supply this basic information, but then again...

the four holes on rear are for wall mounted bracket, the stand that goes in bottom generally requires the removing of a cover plate which will be about size of the upper part of stand and will be approx four screws, remove cover and stand will slot in and fix with scres/bolts accordingly.

Hi, we have just bought a second hand Hitachi Hi Plasma TV Model PD1, 42PMA400A. We have a wall bracket but what we'd eally like is a stand ... the base plate and two stems that go into the bottom of...

If you search on Ebay for your TV's exact model number, sometimes you can find a replacement stand for it there from someone who has their TV mounted to the wall and is no longer using it. These are normally fairly heavy and bulky items, so Ebay purchase prices and shipping costs can vary widely.

I did not see any for your exact model of TV available there when I looked, but the online selection changes daily, so you can always keep checking back. Just search on Ebay for 'HITACHI TV STAND' or 'HITACHI TV BASE' and you will see a wide variety of them available for different Hitachi TV models as well as what the average price for them is.
Otherwise you can just buy a generic wall mount floor stand for around $100 which bolts to the TV like a wall mount, but actually sits on the floor instead of being bolted to the wall.

Here are some links to a few different models currently available on Ebay which include pictures so you can see what I mean:

Just make an educated guess judging by the size of the bolts you do have, whether they are too big or too small, or you could measure with a measuring tape by measuring the head of the bolt. Then take those measurements to your local hardware or other store and either you will be able to find one you feel confident about size wize or you can find someone to help you. As far as specific bolts go there really isnt a difference, as long as you get a decent size, if its a little too big it will be ok as the threads will just cut their way in regardless.

Hope this helped.
