Does it look OK if you plug it into a monitor? If so it's a hardware issue with your screen. I haven't seen what you're describing before. Also,do you mean there is no restore date in backup and restore? If so you have no restore points to work from. If you have the disks you can restore from them. Save your data somewhere first. You can call gateway and they should be able to walk you through a system restore from the hard disk. Again save your data to something external? You can usually buy factory restore disks from the manufacturer for about $50 also

Safe Mode with Networking
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Enable Boot Logging
Enable VGA mode
Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)
Directory Services Restore Mode (Windows domain controllers only)
Debugging Mode
Start Windows Normally
Reboot
Return to OS Choices Menu
Use the up and down arrow keys to move the highlight to your choice.
Select safe mode with command prompt then type in chkdsk/f/r which will scan for and and attempt repair of bad files and bad sectors on hard drive
You should have no input while chkdsk utility is in progress any input might further damage your computer also
Use the System File Checker tool (SFC.exe) to determine which file is causing the issue and then replace the file.
Type the following command and then press ENTER: sfc /scannow The sfc /scannow command scans all protected system files and replaces incorrect versions with correct Microsoft versions.
If this fails you might use the system restore option

Broken function keys on gateway NV57H13u

If you are sure they were working yesterday then roll your system back to a day before yesterday by using System Restore. System Restore will allow you to select a Restore Point (date and time) before you started having the problem. System Restore does not delete your data, documents, music, pictures, videos or programs (unless the program was installed after the restore point you selected). Click Start/Program or All Programs. Click Accessories/System Tools/System Restore. In windows 7 just click Start and in the search box type: System Restore then look up at the returned search results and click on System Restore.

System Recovery on the other hand will delete everything and set your system back to when you first purchased it.

How can i restet my gateway laptop back to the factory settings? ml6714 with windows vista.

Hi and welcome to FixYa!

To factory restore your gateway;

Shut down the computer,

Restart it,

As soon as you press the power button to start it,

Immediately start tapping the F10 key,

This will bring up an options menu,

choose repair your computer

choose system recovery,

It will do all the work from there.

Also, depending on your Gateway, you may have to use ALT F8

Another way to do this is

Click Start on your desktop.

All programs;

Gateway;

Gateway recovery management;

Click Restore;

A pop up will appear,

click yes and then start.

If you have your computer on password, it will prompt you to enter it.

When the computer restarts;

Click next two times when the Restore from factory default appears

Click OK

Click OK again in the box that appears and wait for the computer to restart.

This may take some time, but another box will appear it will say 'set up windows'

Click next (license and agreement will come up)

click next again

Enter user name (and pic if you want and wallpaper)

Click next

Click use recommended settings

Set your date and time

Select location in the next screen

click start to finish it.

Let the computer finish the rest for you and you are set!

If my solution helped you, please rate it! You do not have to be the original poster that asked the question, it only takes a second and doesn't cost anything! All opinions and ratings are welcomed!

I have a gateway laptop and when I start it up, it will show the windows start up screen and then the screen goes black. How do I fix this?

Something to try:

Power Off computer. Turn it back ON then when you see gateway logo start tapping on the F8 key and it will take you to Windows Advanced Options. Select safemode and press enter. If it ask you to select a Operating System just press enter. You will see white text. Once you get to the icons on your desktop It will state that it is running in safemode click on yes, then go to
Start Menu then All programs then Accessories then System tools then System Restore. Select to restore to an earlier date then in the calendar select a bolded date at least a week ago. Follow the prompts and your system will restart. This does not hurt to try. Hope that helps.

Try going into safe mode upon startup by hitting the F8 button. If it does then hit safe mode to get into your computer. Go to start>accessories>system tools>system restore. Follow the wizard to restore your computer to a date earlier than when you started having problems. Let me know if you have any problems or questions.
