Check out this:
http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/create-a-usb-stick-on-windows

This gives instructions on how to download, and create a ubuntu bootable USB stick.

http://www.ubuntu.com/download/desktop/try-ubuntu-before-you-install

This will give instructiosn on how to load and install from said USB.

You will need:
A working computer with Windows
A 2GB or larger USB stick
Internet connection

After you've made your USB stick, when booting up the computer you wish to install ubuntu on be sure you have the USB stick inserted when powering it on. When the start screen comes up press ESC to enter the BIOS or boot order. Select the USB stick from within the BIOS boot order menu, or the USB stick from the boot options menu.

Load ubuntu, install, enjoy.

How to install/dual boot Linux on your mac

you need to

A) download a copy of linux (i always use ubuntu)
http://www.ubuntu.com/desktop/get-ubuntu/download

B) burn that copy of linux to a CD
(to do this you need to go to your disk utility app and click burn image to disk and than select the iso you chose, using other software the option will be something like "create mountable disk" OR "burn bootable image")

C) boot to that cd--- to do this you put the cd in and reboot your mac while holding the 'C' key

D) open the partition editor and create a partition on your hardrive the size that you want linux to be (idealy replacing the main partition on your computer not one of the smaller boot partition)

*Optional- If you are planning on dual booting do not replace the main partition completely instead create a new linux partition from the main partition's free space additionally if you are dual booting and using Leopard or later you can use the bootcamp app to create a partition than use the linux partition editor to format the bootcamp partition to free space and than install linux on it

E) once you have the partition made simply follow the initial instructions to install there will be an installer app that replaces your now free partition with linux.

*if you chose to dual boot to access linux simply hold the 'Alt' key when booting up and than highlight the linux/windows HD
Enjoy
How Do I Correct the Error and Recover an Acer Computer hard drive?

In order to correct the hard drive partitions so the recovery program will work, you can use a variety of tools listed below.

1) Active@ KillDisk - Use their free killdisk program to wipe the hard drive clean off all partitions.

2) Ubuntu or another Linux alternative bootdisk. Create a boot disk for the Ubuntu Live CD and boot the computer from it. During the boot process it will ask to "Try Ubuntu without any change to your computer". This is the option you want. Once Ubuntu loads, find the partition editor program under the System, Administration menu..

To delete a partition, right click on the partition that you wish to delete and select "Delete" from the menu. Once you are sure that you've selected the correct partition, and are positive that you have backed up all the files or data that you wish to save from that partition, click the "Apply" button at the top of the Window, and the partition will be deleted.

3) Use the Acer Hard Drive Format Utility, on some versions of Acer computers when you have the option to create Recovery disks, the system creates a hard drive format utility CD as well. Boot from this CD and format the hard drive.
The utility will recreate 1 partition (C: drive), after the partition has been created, you'll be able to reload the HDD with the backup media. The file is an ISO image for CD media only (not compatible with floppy diskettes). Create a CD disc from the ISO image file using a CD writer program on another computer.

Once the hard drive partitions have been deleted by any of the utilities above, you can proceed with rebooting the computer using the Acer System CD and proceeding with the complete recovery of the system.

Try creating a CD\DVD of Ubuntu and using the Live boot option. It should load as a non install and let you trouble shoot from there. gl

DSL does not contain all of the drivers needed for the computer to work well. Try Gentoo linux, or Arch linux.

My sister has a two-plus-year-old MT6840 that just had the battery replaced. However, both before that issue and since she has had trouble with her display. The computer will load as though it is starting...

The easiest way to narrow down the problem would be to boot the computer with a copy of Ubuntu.

You can either create a boot cd or convert a flash drive into a bootable drive. The flash drive boots much much quicker so I definitely recommend you following the creation method for that on Ubuntu's download page. If you don't have a flash drive, don't worry, the boot cd will still work ;)

One thing to note is your computer's boot order. Usually pressing F12 on a Gateway will bring up a temporary menu so you can select your copy of Ubuntu. If not enter the BIOS setup menu and change your boot order.

Once the Ubuntu launch screen comes up just choose TRY UBUNTU this will create a live session.

If Ubuntu works without any hitches then it's likely a Windows software issue OR a hardware issue.

You can run a trail version of HDD REGENERATOR to physically scan the hard drive exactly like Ubuntu, LIVE.

If it comes back clean then YES, it's a windows software issue. Which entails more testing and button pushing.

Try the above and let me know how everything turns out.

0xc000000f error, Laptop wont boot into vista, tryed vista dvd to try recovery but wont load

That error maybe a harddrive faulty / not connected. But you may need to go into the setup/bios and change the boot order so that it boots from CD first To get into the bios when the PC boots you should see a message on the screen for a very short while which will tell you how to get into the setup/bios - usually by pressing a key - like F2, or DEL key or F10 once in the bios you then need to go through the menus at the top until you find a menu page which includes the boot order - make sure CD is first
Another test, if you have access to another PC and CD writer, would be to create a bootable CD from ubuntu - this will boot from the CD only and test that the hardware works
goto http://www.ubuntu.com/ and download the ISO
full details are here http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/use-ubuntu-live-cd-to-backup-files-from-your-dead-windows-computer/
click on the image "download ubuntu"
Select a location
then begin download
Save the file onto your PC – remember where you saved it – so you can find it again to create the image bootable CD.
You do NOT copy the ISO file onto a CD - you have to use the ISO to create a bootable CD The CD creator software you have on the PC may have an option to create an image from an ISO If not - use this free program http://www.imgburn.com/
When the UBUNTU CD boots - you will see the following options 1) Try ubunto without any change to your computer 2) Install ubuntu 3) Check CD for defects 4) Test memory 5) Boot from first hard disk.
Use OPTION 1 "Try ubunto without any change to your computer" ONLY this option this will run from the CD and not install onto your harddrive - be careful, if you do install onto the PC - you will wipe the data and software OFF your hard drive.., so repeat only use option 1
Now you should see a UBUNTU desktop This at least proves the main parts of the PC are working
With UBUNTU it may just be possible to copy any of your data onto a USB harddrive or thumbdrive
