Question about Craftsman Garden

1 Answer

I have a problem with the linkage on my model #917.377190 lawn mower.

I had to replace the carburetor on the mower and I am not sure that I have linkage hooked up right because the mower will only run at idle.

Hook the wire that goes to the governor to the butterfly on the carby , the other should go to the choke.

common problems to all older lawnmower, lots of dirt and dust the mower goes through and ages. I would first start by taking the carb apart and clean the filter with soap and water, allow it to air dry. also carburetor prob need rebuilding or replacing. Pick up some Carburetor cleaner at any auto part store and spay it down the carb, dont be afraid to spray allot in there and let it dry for 1/2 and hours. carb tend wear and parts need replacing just like any engines. 99% of the time lawn mower carb goes out before the engine will and common problems with all lawn mower. If you not mechanical incline or dont want to rebuilt it, just buy the whole new carb and replace it, fairly cheap easy to replace and will last you another 10 + years or more. www.briggsandstratton.com

How difficult is it to replace a carburetor for YardMan by MTD push mower?

Depends on what engine. IF it is Briggs and Stratton you remove the aircleaner cover and air cleaner element. Behind that are three little 5/16 bolts, remove those and the aircleaner mount comes off.Behind that are 2 3/8 bolts that bolt to carb to a brackett that holds it to the engine. Remove the fuel line by removing the clamps. Becareful with the throttle linkage. Some models of Briggs had a plastic throttle and it breaks easy,The wire linkage has a Z bend ,so hold the wire while moving the carb off the Z. Why would you replace the carb. Its simple to rebuilt. You local Yard Equipment dealer would probabley do it for $20 bucks instead of paying 60 or more for a new one. Its probably only full of dirt or water and the needle and seat need changed.
Hope this helps.

There should be a wire that is a link between the governor arm & the carburetor butterfly (throttle) arm. Some use a small coil spring hooked to the same holes as an anti-rattle device.
