I have a 220 watt amp with two speaker outlets. Mfg suggests I use a series Y for each of two speakers. Will that reduce overall power as compared to hooking each speaker from a different outlet

A Y/splitter cable with divide the power of that channel equally between the two speakers. Regardless of whether you use one speaker or two per connection point the total max audio output is still 220 watts. You're just distributing it between more speakers for better coverage.

i soundds like its too powerfull for them beouse some new speakers now have a shut off if they are ready to go out or blow to make sure you dont damage them

This is a 6 ohm speaker, which should be wired to a 6 ohm outlet, but 4 ohm outlet is working, so allow it to stay like that. If you try to connect to 2 or 1 ohm outlet, the performance will actually worsen. In electrical theory, maximum power is transferred to a load (speaker) when the impedance is a match. You already have a mis-match of 6 to 4 ohm, but it is close enough. Try not to go farther away from maximum power transfer. Your speaker will draw too much current on a 1 or 2 ohm outlet and you may end up blowing fuses, too.

Is the problem much more noticeable when the car is at idle? Double check that Alternator output. 70 amps is not high output, and if the problem is especially noticeable at idle, it's probably due to the alternator putting out lower voltage( a common thing with alternators). Also, with that much draw from your sub amp, the wire from battery to alternator should be beefed up, as well as the ground wire from battery. You can make up your own cables by purchasing the wire to length and wire lugs at a local Welding shop, 4 gauge from alternator to battery is good. High output aftermarket Alternators shoot into the 200 amp range.

I got 2 10in kicker comps and the rms on them each is 150 watts and can i hook them up to a 1000 watt sony xplod 2 channel amp and do i use both channel or just one or bridge them


1st thing is amps outputs have to be properly "loaded" this value is given in "ohms" if your amp says minimum speaker "loading" impedance is 4 ohms ( I suspect it does) then you may load that 1 channel down to only 4 ohms or amp will be damaged , most speakers are rated in ohm's Impedance (look for Greek symbol for omega) look for its rating somewhere on it doing the electrical formula math if you connect two 4 ohm speakers in parallel to one channel ( +=+ / -/- ) this divides down to 2 ohms (not good) but if you take same speakers and connect in series together (+to-/+to-) this gives you eight ohms (better) , the watts rating is a figure for you to determine the amount of power the speakers will take before failure , hence just because you connect 200 watt speakers to a 2000 watt amp is no indication that speaker will take all 2000 watts ( it will fail long before that point ) watts do ADD together like the above example two 4 ohm 250 watt speakers connected to one channel of amp in series will look like ONE 8 ohm 500 watt speaker to amp of course over 16 ohms load speaker volume will greatly diminish and amps have max impedance loads for them as well although there not often published
this is why I love the old TUBE!!! amps they load all the way down to 2 ohms and go up as far as 32 ohms load with no problems , they sound better as well across the board as well

You can do that but your subs will have to be monsters or you will blow them out as bridged mode will drive 2400 watts RMS into 4 ohms. Many speakers are rated in peak or program power... these are FAKE specifications. with this amp in bridged mode each of two identical speakers would have to be rated at 2400 watts program or about 3600 watts peak each to survive... When rating speakers and amps ALWAYS compare RMS values... and for safety use an amp of 80% of the RMS rating of the connected speaker or speaker system.

150 watts should be easily handled by four Peavey speakers in the connection you described.. If the Peavey's are 8 ohms, then your total load was 8 ohms for the series/parallel arrangement which is well within the 2 ohm drive capability of the Crate according to specs.

I question if you really mean the speakers were in series? This requires a special cable to do this. Now if you mean they were "daisy chained" like the amp went to one speaker and another cable connected that speaker to another, then you REALLY had ALL speakers in parallel electrically which would be at the 2 ohm low limit of the amp... In either case, with only 1/4 of the 150 Watts to each, the speakers should NOT have been damaged. The amp MAY have been damaged. Try each speaker individually at a REASONABLE level to test.

If you plug into the effects loop out jack,OFTEN the connection to the internal power amp is broken so you might have to arrange a special cable as a wye to go back into the power amp as well as your external amp. In any case pwere ALL interconnected amps, etc from the same power source/receptacle for system safety.

How can i get more power through 8 ohm speakers?


In addition to the impedance rating of a speaker, there is also a wattage rating. Ideally, power output of the amplifier should not exceed the power handling rating of the speakers. The input impedance of the speakers should match the amplifier output impedance for maximum power transfer (Rin = Rout where R is resistance in Ohms). Supplying more power or wattage to the speaker than it can handle will result in distortion, and if the output of the amp is high enough and present long enough, it will damage the voice coil of the speaker. Make sure that when comparing wattage ratings, you are comparing the same rating between amps & speakers. Watts can be expressed three different ways: "Peak", "Peak to Peak" and the industry standard "RMS". The relationship is such: an industry standard value of "70 Watts RMS" (70W RMS) equals "100 Watts Peak" (100W P) *and* also is the same as "200 Watts Peak to Peak" (200W P-P). Furthermore, there is no such thing as 200W "Music Power" (but is often expressed this way to inflate the RMS wattage rating (and usually is close to the P-P rating). A speaker is an electrical device, so most the things that happen to electrical devices when over powered can happen to speakers and amplifiers, too.

Increasing the signal source level (input signal to the amp via volume control) in an attempt to get more audio power to the speaker can overdrive the amplifier - resulting in "clipping". This is plainly heard as "muddied" sound. The otherwise loud, crisp, clean passages in music end up sounding garbled and unpleasant when an amplifier is over driven in this way. This can damage both the amp and the speaker.

Cheap amps with higher THD (total harmonic distortion) ratings sound worse than their counterparts with a lower THD rating - when all other variables are the same. You'll pay extra for lower THD values.

You might be able to make a speaker seem louder by positioning the speakers against a wall, on the floor, etc. Experiment; as it can make a significant difference in sound levels and low frequency bass sounds.

Is amp big enough for speakers


Hello,

To run 2 subs, the amp would be a little small. The subs will run OK, they just won't be very loud.

It's usually better to compare and match up the RMS power rather than the peak power. The Sony XS-L10P5B sub has a peak power handling figure of 1200 watts, but the RMS is 300 watts. The Sony XM-ZZR3301 monoblock amp puts out 1100 watts peak, but only 330 watts RMS. They would work great together, 1 sub, 1 amp. But if you add another sub, each one would only be getting about 165 watts. They'd work OK, just not as loud as they could be.

Sounds like your speakers had too many watts sucking from an amp that couldn't produce the power to feed them.
What is the max watt power output rating for your amp?
Compare the amperage of all the speakers combined and make sure they are 15% lower that the rating on your amp. Be sure to include the sub in your totals.
Chances are you've blown the power supply on your amp.

I have 2 pioneer ts-w307d4 400watts rms and an GMD7400M 400 Watt Mono Digital Amplifie now how do i connect this or what is the best connection or setup?

Since the the subs are 4ohms & the amp's highest output is @ a 2 ohm load, you will need to wire the subs in parallel to the amp. When speakers are wired in parallel it reduces the resistance the amp feels on it's output. In "parallel" means connecting the + terminals of each speaker to the + terminal of the amp. Then connect the - terminals of each speaker to the - terminal of the amp. Make sure you use the correct wire size called for the spk mfg. That's it. If you need additional help, let me know.

How big of am amp do i need?

Hi,

A series parallel network of four (4) 60 watts speakers would give you the same ohmage/impedance but with 240 watts capacity. Just two in parallel would give you half the ohmage/impedance but 120watts capacity or two in series would give you double the ohmage/impedance with again 120watts capacity.

Incidentally, if you bridge the power amp, you double the amp's output but only mono.
