There needs to be sufficient disk memory on the PC to hold the contents of the iPhone (8GB or 4GB) plus some extra. This is because the iTunes backs-up the iPhone before the restore. Check and clear some space on your PC hard drive and try again.

Turn your phone off and plug it into your computer holding the home button down. That will put your phone into restore mode.

You can, use SharePod, http://www.getsharepod.com/download/ this means you can sync music with ANY computer (not apps though because those can only be syn'd to max of 5 devices with permission etc.)
