SOURCE: elec water heater no hot water

Check the breaker to see if the unit is getting power. You will need a voltage meter to check out the thermostat on the unit and also you will need to use it to check if the elements aren't blown. Sounds like the unit isn't getting power but could be the thermostat located under one of the panels on the side of the unit.

SOURCE: Hot water tank leak

drain valve must have already been leaking, that's why someone put the cap on. It's ok to cap the drain but never the pressure/temp relief. If the water is coming out of the drain (not around it) you could either replace the cap or the drain valve to stop the leak - otherwise it's time for a new water heater.

SOURCE: need to empty reliance 501 hot water heater how?

1) Shut the breaker off to it at the panel. 2) Hook a hose up to it (the bottom has a drain). 3) Close the valve to the water heater (on the cold water supply). 4) Open drain on the bottom of water heater. 5) Open the relief valve to allow air into the tank (it won't drain otherwise - think if you put your finger on one end of a straw - the liquid stays in until you let go). Why are you draining it by the way?

My electric hot water isnt workin! My unit is 10 years old GE10074 240 volts AC only-45 gallons. 4500 WATTS. The cold water runs fine-NO HOT-what could it be.GE model#:GE38S06AAG Serial#305D10074

Hi LiLo

Is this unit designed to pre heat the water to a given temperature or is it On-Demand. Eg the heater turns on only when a tap is turned on?
Either way, you need to check if AC is getting to the heater by using a multimeter of a Neon Light tester.
Once you find out if it's got AC at the heater then it's a simple matter of following the AC to the actual element.
If the Element shows 240v across the element but does not heat up then the Element is open circuit and will need replacing.
If there is some control mechanism stopping the element from getting 240v then you've found the problem. The Control circuit or temperature sensor.

Good Luck

Hot water does not last long. Hot water heater is a 50 gal ge smart water heater. It takes a long time to heat and is not very hot when it reaches shower in the back part of house. Where are the coils or...

probably has a bad heating element. May be a little limed up also. Drain the heater and replace the elements. Take a special tool to remove and replace the elements. ( fairly cheap) You can probably get the elements and parts at a good hardware store. The people at the store probably will explain to you how to replace them. Feedback please if this was of help

Hot water lasts half the time

How old is the heater?

It may be something as simple as just needing to flush the tank to remove any sedemints....and hopefully so because this is the easiest/cheapest thing to do.

If this is not the case go ahead and remove the heating elements and check for wear. Replace them if necessary. I would also replace the thermostats that accompany each of the elements.

Checking and replacing both of this requires you to drain the tank completely and should be close to $25 total....last time I checked.

Hot Water inconsistent

Something you can do, following your fathers logic,   is to attach a hose to the drain of the tank and run water from the bottom of the tank into a drain untill all the sediment is removed (Water runs clean). This is normally done once a year as preventive maintenance  on all tank type water heaters. The logic sounds good to me.
