Many openers have a type of load limit such that if it meets resistance, it will reverse. Some have an adjustment on the opener somewhere that you can change how much resistance it takes to reverse.
Also, your spring tension may be too high. If you disconnect the door from the opener, there should be enough spring tension to allow for easy raising AND lowering of the door - if it's not balanced correctly, you can have the problem you described.

SOURCE: Sears Garage Door Opener Problem

The problem lies in the RPM sensor, most likely due to the interrupter cup assembly. The interrupter cup assembly is the black cap that runs through the RPM sensor. You may have forgotten to re-attach this piece or it is probably moving too far out when the garage sets in motion. To fix this, remove the cup assembly, unscrew the two screws on the top metal piece with a 1/8 allen wrench, push the metal piece as far in as possible and put the screws back on. This will give more room for the cup assembly to spin and be read by the RPM sensor. Hope this helps!

First unplug the unit for about 5 min. to reset the circuit board. while you are waiting use an ohm heter or multi tester to see is the limit switch works.

If the switch tests good and resetting doesn't help you probably need a new board.

Be sure to also get a suge protector to help save the system in the future.

Hope this helps

I have a genie pro 88 garage door opener push the button and it opens just fine traviels up to the limit switch and stops perfect. then push the button to go down and nota,

are the wires connected to the motor correct
for the limit switch there should be one wire ( normally black or neutral going to the center connection and the other wire ( red or active wires going to either of the other two terminals
that set up means that power is available to the limit switches and the return is the neutral wire
it works like this
on the up direction power is delivered to the motor by the controller box through a closed limit switch
when the up limit is circuit is broken the motor stops
the down button reverses the polarity of the motor in the controller box and so the motor runs in reverse through the the lower limit switch until that circuit is broken In the down action the upper limit switch circuit is completer but the control box has no power to it until the lower switch circuit is brokenis broken
the motor is dc voltage and to getting it to go up or down is done by the control box changing polarity for the motor power according to the button position pressed on the remote

Why is my garage door suddenly reversing when going down?

Deb, that reversal is a child safety device - if the bottom edge of the door detects contact with any object, it'll immediately reverse so it doesn't kill a child. Or a cat, dog, whatever.

The opener mechanism should have a stop switch that prevents the door from closing hard against the floor - that stop switch needs to be adjusted so that the door will stop JUST before hard contact. That'll take care of it "bouncing" off the floor & reversing. As to it reversing before it touches the floor... examine both guide rails closely to see if there's any obstruction that the door's bottom edge may be contacting to trigger the child protection reversal switch.

Garage door will not go down it is in the up position and wants to go up but hits the motor and won't go down,

It sounds like your up limit control is badly out of adjustment. Remove the cover from the motor unit and you will see the limit switch assembly. You need to adjust the up limit contacts so they make and then your door should reverse and go down. Adjust that up limit so the door stops when the trolley is about 5 inches from the motor housing.

HBW077 Craftsman: door travels downward only 10"

Sounds like you have a bad RPM sensor board. This is a small printed circuit board just in front of the motor. It's job is to reverse the door when it hits an obstacle but will act as you describe when they go bad. The part number is 41C4398A and is available at Sears or any good door service company.

This sometimes happens when the door is traveling just a bit too far downward, hits the floor and the safety causes it to reverse and open. Locate the 'down limit' on the side of the motor unit and turn it just a little in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking may be necessary to get it just right.

The garage door closes and then opens up again, I have to close it several times before it secures. There are no obstructions. Is this a sensitivity problem?

More than one thing can cause this type problem.

If the main light flashes 10 times when the door reverses it is a door sensor problem. Make sure they are pointed at one another and the small light on each one is not flickering ever so slightly.

If the door reverses when it hits the floor it is a sign that the door is traveling a bit to far. The adjustment for this is on the side of the motor unit. Turn the 'down limit' in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Some tweaking will probably be necessary.

On the side of the motor unit you will find the 'down limit' control. Turn this in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. It would be a good idea to take the cover off and watch the limit assembly while you are doing this to make sure it contacts before the door hits the floor.

Remove the cover and take a look at the limit switch assembly. It pretty much snaps together and it sounds like a part has come loose.
