Fill then stand it up to view the fill level. Unless you see a warning I doubt you can overfill it. Just top off the tank and go.

My iron is steaming out rust coloured water how can I clean it please

Having been asked this many times, I wrote it as a Tip to save me writing each time.

Tip & How-To about Irons
Cleaning a Laundry Iron

Get some CLR descaler and mix it to the directions. Turn the iron on and set it to steam. Turn the iron off and put the CLR into it. When it has cooled a little, sit it faceplate down in an oven proof dish. Leave it over night. The CLR will drip through and sit in the dish cleaning the inside, and the topside of the soleplate. The next day, fill with water and shake upside down to empty any remaining CLR and scale through the fill hole. Keep filling and shaking to empty until the water comes clean.

If you don't want to use CLR, you can use white vinegar undiluted.

Steam stays on all the time

the valve is jammed

you live in england

so... take a calgon tab
and make up some boiling water

add the boiling water to fill the iron half way
now make up a paste with the calgon tab {a bit of like 1/8th}

add this paste to the water chanel of the iron
and then using a fresh boiling water
water it in
to fill the iron
let it sit for two mins
then exercise the valves for steam and water
and tip the iron front and back
let it sit a further 2 mins
NOW
plug in the iron and set it cotton number 1 {40deg usually}
let it sit and hiss
and steam it thru again exercise the valves
youll also need to make sure the holes on the base of it are clear

you can also leave the botton of the iron in a small tray of a calgon tab

this disolves all the lime scale and will bring perhaps
a sad iron or etc back to life again

after a good rinse thru reuse this treatment every few months

hey i live in glasgow so unlike the limes our water is pure gold

no lime ...

My iron is leaking water. Can it be repaired? I picked it up off the ironing board today and it was sitting in a puddle of water. It continued to pour out the bottom. Is this fixable?

I have had several do this after many many years of use. I did not find a fix but ended up buying a new model. If you do not need to use the steam function, you can still use it. Might want to use a spray bottle with water to add the steam the old fashion way.

Philips steam iron no steam and red tap light is flashing even when filled up with water it's still getting hot and water is boiling but steam fiction not working as red light will not go out

It sounds like the flow holes are CLOGGED with scale inside. To clean it out:

1. Drain the water/steam out the pour-in shoot at the top of the handle, over the sink. Is any crap coming out?

2. Take some VINEGAR and pour it straight into the fill pour-in shoot. Don\'t dilute it. Fill up the IRON to full line. Let the vinegar SOAK the inside of the COLD iron for 15-20 minutes, by placing it FACE DOWN on an old bath towel, on a heat-resistant surface, such as a granite counter top, or metal cookie sheet. Don\'t put the towel on the ironing board!!! It may get stained badly. Let it sit, COLD for 20 minutes. You can swirell the vinegar around by shaking the iron.

Stand it up on its flat end, with the vinegar inside, still. Take some fresh vinegar and dip Q-tips into the vinegar and clean the slots and holes on the bottom plate. Any burn streaks or soil can be removed with wiping the plate with vinegar. After you clean all the holes and slots with vinegar from the outside, TURN ON THE IRON with the vinegar inside. The vinegar will heat up and should come out the holes. If any holes are not blowing vinegar/steam, clean them with q-tips again. Don\'t let all of the vinegar inside steam out!! Just heat it enough to make sure all of the holes are clean. Some white film may come out of the holes on to the face plate--it is calcium build-up from using tap water in the iron.

Now DUMP out vinegar inside the iron and reservoir through the pour-shoot You may see crud and crap coming out. Repeat the process of filling it up, steaming through the holes etc. until the vinegar comes out clear!!!

DON\'T use tap water in any IRON. Use distilled water, or even bottled drinking water (without flavoring, additives, of course). This will prevent corrosion and calcium build up in the iron.

ALWAYS completely drain the iron from the pour-in spout each time you are finished using it!! After pouring out the tank\'s water, you can set the iron to STEAM HIGH, and force any water inside to boil off and out of iron.! Never keep water in the reservoir or iron.

I set my iron, when hot, and done using it, with the pointed side DOWN in the sink drain to make sure it is dry.

So clean it with vinegar often, use bottled drinking water or better, distilled water and it will prevent this.

Need to know best way to clean; inside & ironing surface. thanks, Glenn

It depends on what "gunk" is on it.
If you've been using the iron for doing laminate adhesive (contact cement) you would need to use lacquer thinner.
If it's just dirty from common household ironing duties you could use baking soda and vinegar.
Apply with a q-tip,or with the iron unplugged,you could fill a shallow pan with the solution and carefully lower the bottom of the iron into it.
For baking soda/vinegar use approx 1 tsp powder to 1/2 cup vinegar.
For the inside of the iron use straight vinegar.
Pour vinegar into the water fill hole,shake gently,let sit for about 10 minutes,then rinse with water. Hope this helps.
