Question about Dryers
This morning, the dryer turned on with no problem and I left it to do its thing. I returned about 15 minutes later and the dryer had stopped after about ten minutes. I tried to restart it, but no luck. When I push the 'Start' button, I hear a momentary shifting sound from behind the front panel, but nothing else. After work, I'll check the circuit box to see if the breaker popped, but, with hearing that sound, I'm thinking the dryer is getting power - unless that's just some sort of mechanical action caused by pushing the 'Start' button. Any ideas?
One thing you can check on if the circuit breaker is okay is to see if the drum turns freely. If the belt is still intact, you should have some resistance to turning the drum by hand. Many dryers have a safety in them that if the belt breaks the dryer will stop and not restart until the belt has been replaced. Hope this helps!

Hello mdonettaYou said,
Dryer shut off towels were not yet dry, turned dial to restart dryer acts as if it isn't getting power I closed door and pushed start button. Nothing! Checked breakers and power cord at outlet all checked okay. Any ideas.
yes, try unplugging the power cord or turning off the breaker for 5 minutes. Either will due. Some times the system needs to be reset!
If this does not work there are internal fuses that can be replaced!
Let me know how it goes!

at leas 15 yrs old??? think it's done its time, its a great machine andwould reccomend replacing with a whirlpool/kenmore unit again.no tworth servicing in my opinion, average call here in new york 150-225, anbd those are for simple issues. id rather put money into new unit! bit be sure to check your venting id say 85% of dryers taking too long to dry are vent related issues

SOURCE: dryer heats up but won't turn
Depending on the make of dryer, there are several possibile reasons for this.
First and foremost, could be a faulty motor- faulty start capacitor, Faulty start relay.
Without more information I cannot be more specific.
Hope this helps.
Please leave feedback.

I posted today (Jan 2, 2009) that I had same problem. Handyman tested for blown thermal fuse, etc and everything was fine. He said I have to replace the timer switch .. well guess what - I fidgeted with the start button (on/off) hard a few times while simultaneously pressing & releasing door switch and it did the trick. In my case the problem was most likely with the start button. Dryer is working fine now!
