Question about John Deere 9510 Sidehill Combine Operator Manual C9

Open Question

JD 9510: backshaft would not maintain speed so changed O rings in upper drive shive though no sign of internal oil leak. Still no speed change possible. Where is the problem?

That could be a sign of a blown head gasket check and make sure the car is not over heating if so that may be the case.

Using oil no smoking or leaking. why?


Sometimes a car will burn a small amount of oil and you wont even see it or it will leak under load(driving at higher speeds.) You didn't say how much oil its using, but you can look at the underside of the car and see if there's oil leaking on the bottom of engine or transmission. At worst, it could be a bad head gasket or intake gasket. You can check your radiator for oil. That's a sign of a bad gasket. If its only using a quart or less between oil changes, I wouldn't worry about it.

3.4 engines are notorious for bad intake manifold gaskets.
if you are going that deep into the engine it is not much more
work to change the head gaskets at the same time, make sure you also replace the head bolts.

Black smoke from 2000 Avalon


I can change my oil every 3 decades and it'll be at regular intervals. What are your intervals? 3000 miles? 84 million Mississippi? One lap around Daytona Raceway?

Where do you see the black smoke and carbon coming from?

A mechanic that "forgot" to change the oil filter is not only a poor mechanic, but he/she is ripping you off. You need an oil filter with each oil change more than you need new oil. If I poured clean water through a dirty Brita filter, would you drink it?

There is no way to tell you exactly what's wrong over the internet (besides your mechanic). But, assuming the smoke and carbon you mentioned is coming from...

the HOOD: You either have an oil leak, or just a bunch of oil sitting on your engine burning off. Check oil with dipstick (something you should be doing at least once a week in a NEW car, let alone a 10year old model.) The leak could be poor workmanship by your mechanic, or something entirely different, too.

the EXHAUST PIPE: You may have blown your piston rings or have a stuck/bent valve.

Toyotas are somewhat known for running well beyond when they should. I blew out rings in my '93 pickup and drove it daily for 3 more months before it actually quit. I'm still not convinced it's dead.

I have a 2006 Impala, 3.5 that I have owned since new and maintained maticulously with oil changes between 3-4000 miles, with filter and premium synthetic oils. But the last two oil changes I find the oil...


The oil is being burned and probably being pulled past the rings (Known as blowby). A 2006 does not need synthetic oil. Even though synthetic is touted as being superior in tolerance to heat and wear additives. It can cause problems in older engines that are designed to use Dino Multigrade oil. Check you manual or cap. If it was using regular (Dino) oil from the start , keep using it. The synthetic may be too thin for the tolerances of you rings and pistons.

Losing antifreeze changed thermostat and resivoir cap


Check you oil for signs of coolant contamination. If coolant is present in the oil, you may have a leaking head gasket or intake manifold gasket. If there is no sign of coolant in the oil, the antifreeze could be leaking past the intake gaskets and into the combustion chamber. It could also be a leak that only shows up when the engine is running, and you are losing the coolant as you drive. This kind of leak is very difficult to locate. You will have to look for signs of antifreeze around the upper and lower intake gasket area with a strong flashlight. Also check for signs of leakage at the upper and lower radiator hose connections and the drain valve at the bottom of the radiator. If you smell antifreeze inside the car, check the carpet for dampness caused by a heater core leak. Sounds like a lot of work, but these mystery leaks as I like to call them, can take repeated inspections before you finally locate them. I hope I have been of some help. If it is a whining noise and not a metallic grinding (such as a bearing noise) and the noise seems to change with a light change in load; IE- louder with maintaining speed on slight incline versus quiter on deceleration, then you are likely to be hearing a worn ring and pinion gear set. Changing the fluid will not affect this type of noise and if the old fluid was free of metallic debris, then you have time on your side to prepare for replacement of the ring and pinion. A great deal of customers are opting for a used differential which is usually a bit less expensive than rebuilding the one you have.
