Not sure what you mean and what model it is, sometimes in the electronics if the CENTER function is activated by hitting a key the typewriter will type backwards, then when you hit the carriage return it will print and the line will be in the center of the margins, do not know if this helps but could be answer.

By any chance did you
remove the platen (the long black roller that the paper raps around)? It might
be installed backwards. The drive gear will not mesh with the motor if this is
done. And trust me it is easy to do, I have
done it a few times myself.
